Room no. 8—A Gulaschkanone. A caisson that carries big rich pots for the field kitchen. Fatty, bubbling soups, a few bits of meat. The general tastes it, mindful of other goulashes in some inviting Stube. A story going around all the fronts tells about the soldier who, standing before the general in review, thinks he’s required to say that the goulash is great and gets a talking-to, that too, like the goulash, is good for the troops.

Eating flesh, pawing flesh, butchering flesh. They don’t skimp on flesh, at death’s little banquets. Corruption of the flesh. After death, below ground or covered by mud in the trenches. Before dying in sin, venial or mortal, agonizing attempts to grope around for a bit of happiness before disappearing. “My loneliness is yo-o-u,” the song says. Rotten flesh, not only in the pot.
