Chapter 11

Sofie

A light round of applause ripples around the table while Calvin stands at the front of the room. I gently pat my hands together, barely making any noise at all, and keep my chin dipped down so I don’t have to look at him.

What he hell is Calvin doing here? There’s no way this can be a coincidence. Did Wade know about this on Friday when we were at the club? Does Wade know about my history with Calvin?

Aimee nudges me with her elbow and leans in close.

“Who is that hunk?” she whispers.

Somehow I manage to give her a noncommittal shrug even while my stomach gives a momentous lurch.

“Are you okay?”

She gives me a concerned look.

“Just some kind of stomach bug I’ve had all weekend,” I say.

And it’s not entirely untrue. Though right now I really do feel like I’m going to get sick.

Wade raises his hands, muting the applause and bringing the room’s focus back to him.

“Now some of you are probably already familiar with Mr. Black’s work…” Did he just direct that comment at me? “But if you’re not, Mr. Black is most recently known for a little place called Club Addiction. His club opened only a few months ago and is already one of the premiere destinations for nightlife here in Manhattan.”

Yeah, I’ve heard it’s all the rage. A great place to take a first date… God, I was such an idiot for going out with him that night. Netflix would have been such a better idea.

Wade continues, “Mr. Black and I have a relationship going back a couple months, which is why I was the first person he called this morning when he realized that he needs help on a little branding issue. But I don’t want to steal your thunder, Calvin. Why don’t you share with all of us your good news.”

He steps aside and takes a seat while Calvin puts on one of his most charming smiles. He steps to the head of the table and addresses everyone. But as he looks around the room I can feel his eyes rest on me for longer than anyone else.

“Thanks Wade, it looks like all of your schmoozing is starting to pay off,” Calvin says. Quiet chuckles and sideways smiles waft around the room. “As Wade already mentioned, I’m the man behind Club Addiction. But that’s not the reason that I’m here this morning.”

He looks at me again. His blue eyes are so intense it feels like they’re going to burn a hole straight through me.

“I’m here this morning because—some would say—I’m turning over a new leaf. Club Addiction has been very good to me, and most of my business partners have told me that, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But I’ve never been one to play by the rules…”

The longer he talks the more anxious I get. I’m not sure where he’s going with this, but I can’t help the feeling that his speech is meant for me more than anyone else.

“So, I’m proud to announce this for the first time, next year I’m launching a new club in London.
