Chapter Fifteen

Situation All Fucked Up

The cocaine made Sweet Pea and T-mack delusional. They began hallucinating and hearing things, like knocks at the front and back doors, crying babies, and loud music.

Sweet Pea told T-mack, “I think someone’s after my family—maybe an enemy of Biggs’s.” She speculated that they knew she was out and possibly wanted to retaliate for the deaths of their family member that had occurred at the hands of Biggs.

T-mack tried to reassure her that no one would be on that after all those years, but he was battling his own demons. He kept hearing voices, and they were driving him crazy, though he only heard them whenever he started to come down off of his high,

It seemed like days had passed while they were held up in the dark house, with no lights, TV, or radio on and the shades drawn. Whenever Sweet Pea began to sober up from her alcohol and drug induced state, she felt guilty for not doing the things she’d been doing with her granddaughter before she’d become a powder-head.

Now, poor baby Deziray had to stay in pissy diapers longer, she only ate once a day, and she had no snacks or fun. She was stuck in darkness, and the whole place reeked from the pissy and shitty diapers that Sweet Pea had thrown any and everywhere throughout the house.

It had once seemed like things were on track and moving in the right direction for Sweet Pea and her granddaughter, but that had quickly shifted into a downward spiral after she sniffed that first line of powder. The seemingly perfect life Sweet Pea had when she’d won her case and had been released from prison was now a mere memory. All she knew was cocaine and alcohol. That was her life, and nothing else mattered. She battled herself about the motives behind her drug addiction, as Sweet Pea had always believed that everything happens for a reason. Her mind constantly ran wild. Was it the letter from the woman that finally pushed me over the edge that I’ve been trying to escape all these years? She had never really grieved when her husband was killed because she knew she had to be strong and not show any softness while in prison. Sweet Pea believed tears were a sign of weakness, and she was far from weak—or at least that was what she pretended.

She sat in the dark with tears running down her face, dressed in a grungy oversized black t-shirt and stained tube socks. She felt sorry for herself. She had everything, but she felt that still wasn’t enough. Although she’d chosen the life she’d led by marrying the man she’d married and accepting his job title and her position, she couldn’t help but wonder what her life would’ve been like if she had followed her dreams of being an actress or celebrity hairstylist, but she’d never given herself the chance to find out.

Deziray lay on the floor next to her grandmother, still sticky from her food the night before.
