CHAPTER 7
Out of Body
Billy heard buzzing, which gradually grew louder and louder. As it did, it sounded more like humming. The four helpers moved to the four corners of Billyâs bed. Billy realized the humming was coming from them.
The humming soon turned into a melody, a song that Billy recognized. It sounded a lot like the one sung by Cherokees every year at the Live Oak Stomp Grounds, where he and Wesley went on Labor Day. The old medicine man in charge of the stomp dance said it was one of the oldest songs the Cherokees knew. And here it was again being hummed by the spirits of thousand-year-old Mound Builder Indians. Wow!
The four helpers reached out toward Billy. One placed his hand under the boyâs right foot. Another hand moved under his left foot. The two spirits near Billyâs head reached under his shoulders.
At that point the humming moved into Billyâs body. It became physical. It made him feel like his body was now humming the song. Strange. The vibration got faster and louder. Billy thought he might fall apart at any minute.
Then the Falcon Priest began speaking. No, it was more like chanting. The chanting was in a strange language Billy had never heard. It wasnât Cherokee, but it did contain a few words that seemed a little familiar.
At a signal from the Falcon Priest, the four helpers lifted Billy from the bed. The teen felt himself rise up supported by the hands of the helpers. He continued to rise and rise until he almost reached the ceiling. Just when Billy thought he was about to smash into the ceiling, he passed through it. Thatâs when he realized that his physical body was still in bed.
Billy began to panic. He was just about to try to escape from the helpers when he saw his grandmother floating beside him. That calmed him down. She smiled.
Soon he and Awinita floated above his house. The helpers turned him over so he could look down at the ground below him. Thatâs when he saw the Falcon Priest up ahead of him. Immediately Billy and the other six transparent spirit forms began racing away, heading south.
Soon they slowed down above a river. Billy looked closely and saw that they were about to reach the cave that once held the serpent captive. The flying group dropped down to the ledge at the mouth of the cave.
Continuing to move, they drifted into the cave. They quickly reached a fork in the path that divided it in two. The right path led down to the dark lake that once held the Horned Serpent. The left path led up through the white crystal room. The four helpers guided Billy along the upward path.
When they reached the white crystal room, the Falcon Priest and Awinita were already there waiting.
âWeâve brought you here, Billy, for a reason,â the priest said. âRemember these images that you and your friend discovered?â
Billy looked again at the images scratched into the walls. It showed two groups of people separated by a central figure.
