Chapter 21

That’s a Swagger

“You didn’t tell me you were dating a Blizzard player. That’s a definite improvement over the Australian tweeze.” River threw himself on Terra’s double bed, rumpling it after she’d just made it.

She pressed her fingers to her temples to stop the thudding. “I am not dating a Blizzard player. We’re just friends.”

He smirked, the jerk. “Yeah, I heard all about how you met at the Polaris dealership. Did you have any clue who he was?”

What?

“I didn’t know who he was when I met him, no.” She needed River out of her bedroom so she could text Cam and get a grasp on the missing pieces of the story. Now. “Don’t you have somewhere to be?”

He picked up one of her throw pillows and started tossing it in the air. “Nope. Thought I’d hang with you today. Now that you’re buddy-buddy with one of the Blizzard’s top blueliners.”

She groaned inside. Oh great! “I have things to do. Girl things. So you just git.” She flapped her hands at him, but her brother didn’t move.

He continued tossing the damn pillow while he inched up her bed, resting his muddy sneakers on her comforter, looking way too comfortable.

She perched her hands on her hips. “Don’t you have a girlfriend or someone you can go bother?”

“Nope. I’m free as a bird. But I miss that feminine touch, so I’ll stick around your frilly room and get my fix for a while longer.” They had a stare-off. That is, she stared at him while he continued relaxing. “Dad doesn’t know.”

Her head jerked. “Doesn’t know what?”

River’s eyes met hers over the cushion. “He doesn’t know that the guy who brought you home last night is a superstar NHL player.”

She blinked. “Then who does he think he is?”

River shrugged. “The usual. Some douche trying to get into your pants. Now if he found out who that douche really is …”

That would be even worse! Rich pro athlete gunning for a quick roll between the sheets with his daughter. And if her father ever discovered that rich pro athlete was the same guy who’d bought the mountain property next door? She shuddered just thinking about it.

“Guy’s actually not a douche, sis. He’s pretty chill.”

“I’m sorry, I must have heard you wrong. Could you please repeat that?”

“Haha. I said the guy’s chill. If you hadn’t been so wasted last night, you would have seen how cool, calm, and collected he was when he waltzed in here. He tells Dad, ‘I’ve brought your daughter home. She’s had too much drink, it’s my fault, and she needs to lie down.’ And he proceeds to ignore the two of us while he gets you situated on the couch. I thought Dad was going to blow a gasket.” River paused to chuckle. “Then when the guy’s all done getting you comfy, he stands up and faces Dad. The guy knew Dad was pissed, but he basically said, ‘Bring it.’ That took balls of granite.”

Terra didn’t miss the admiration in River’s tone.
