Why am I doing this?

Right, because I can't be rude and say No, Brooks, every minute we spend together, we're flirting with danger. No, you cannot come to this cake tasting with me, because your presence makes me feel too happy and excited to be alive.

That's exactly what he does to me. Before I looked out the window of the boutique and found him standing there, this was yet another day of things to check off my To Do List. One more day of planning somebody else’s dream wedding instead of taking the time to work on my own life.

In other words, I was feeling sort of down.

Now, strolling down the street with Brooks at my side, grateful for an excuse to spend time together. This might actually be fun.

“So, how many different cakes are you supposed to be tasting today? Or do you not know until you get there?”

“No, Tonya already selected a handful to test out, and Quinn had a couple of his own that he wanted to try.” I check my notes app, where I wrote down all the flavors so I can give them my opinions.

“Ten?” he practically shouts. “There are ten different cakes?”

“It's not like we have to eat an entire cake every time.”

“But… ten? Jeez. I would have given you, like, two or three.”

“I guess not everybody can be as decisive as you.”

He opens the door for me and I step through into the cool, quiet bakery. The storefront is next door, while this is where customers come for tastings and consultations.

Amy, the owner, greets us right away. I've never met her—she moved to town after I left—and right away when she gets a look at Brooks, I find myself wondering if they know each other. And not because she's visited the club for lunch, either.

But no, I'm being silly and jealous for no reason. Right away, she turns her attention back to me and gives me a brilliant smile. “I'm so glad to see you both here. This all goes so much more smoothly when both the bride and groom are together to make their decision.”

“Wait, what? No, no, that's not it at all.” I really need to stop talking, but it's like my mouth has a mind of its own.

“Zoe here is the planner. I'm just tagging along for some free cake.” As always, he can't help but be charming, and Amy’s soft giggle tells me it had its intended effect. If only it were that easy for us. We could flirt and have fun without feeling like we're both being disloyal.

“Let's get started,” Amy suggests, clapping her hands briskly. “Follow me. Can I get you something to drink? It might be nice to have a palate cleanser between options.”

“Yes, thank you.” I can't even bring myself to look at Brooks after the way I made a fool of myself. What is it about him that makes me so tongue-tied? That's a stupid question. I know exactly what it is. I just don't want to admit it.
