Jason and Gwen continued to avoid any serious discussion about their relationship, or at least Gwen hadn’t brought it up, and Jason had been too afraid to rock the boat to initiate any further conversation. Gwen went back to work, and Jason spent his days preparing for the weekend audit. On Tuesday night, Jason cooked dinner for Gwen at his apartment. They’d decided to spend a relaxing evening at home since Jason would be out of town for the rest of the week.

“This is delicious,” Gwen said, closing her eyes as she enjoyed her last bite of pasta. “I should make you cook every night.” Gwen grinned at Jason, who scooped up the last of the sauce on his place with a piece of garlic bread.

“I’d like that.” Jason watched Gwen’s expression, wondering if this hint of his domestic intentions would sour her mood, but she seemed to take his comment in stride.

“I wonder how this brunch with Anne and Val on Sunday is going to go. I’ve been a miserable maid-of-honor. It’s been so hard lately. But I need to plan Val’s shower. The wedding is six weeks away.” Gwen’s tone was relaxed, but Jason could see worry lines appear around her eyes.

Moving around to stand behind her, Jason put his hands on her shoulders and massaged gently. He could feel her muscles relax. “It’s all going to work out, Gwen. You know Val, she probably doesn’t even want a shower.”

Gwen chuckled. “She’s so stressed about the wedding that it hasn’t even come up in the conversation. But Anne wants to have a party for all the society ladies so I need to get back on the ball. Val may not want a shower, but she definitely wants to make Anne happy.”

Still rubbing her shoulders, Jason said, “I’m planning a stag night for John the night before the wedding. I never thought John would go for it, but his whole demeanor seems to have changed since meeting Val.”

Gwen turned to face Jason. “I know what you mean. He went from reclusive to man about town overnight. At least, he doesn’t seem to mind being out in public as much. He even appeared at a ribbon cutting the other day with Roger Barton. You know that couldn’t have been pleasant.”

Since the election, the former mayor disappeared from public politics. But his fingers could still be felt in city government, especially in terms of the resistance Gwen faced from some of his cronies. Karen Fredrickson was the worst. Karen had never been a fan of Barton’s, but for some reason, her animosity toward Gwen and Jason had grown like a weed since he’d left office.

“Did I tell you Karen is actually trying to sabotage me now? And she’s not being subtle.”

Jason sat down again. “No. But I can’t say it’s surprising. She was openly hostile to me before I left, even in front of Tom. What did she do?”

“She told me the budget meeting had been rescheduled next week so I would miss it.
