Vin made it through to their mid-afternoon break between scenes, proud of himself for holding his shit together for most of the day.

He never would have made it that far if he hadn’t shoved the blackmail text to the back of his mind and buried it under a blanket of denial so thick, no light could shine on it.

But that constriction in his chest wouldn’t ease, and he couldn’t draw in a full breath. Even moving the equipment and lights around had taken more out of him than it should have. If he’d been asthmatic, he would have reached for an inhaler.

He grabbed a cola and a finger sandwich from the spread of food the resort provided out by the pool. Not that he had an appetite, but he needed to keep up his strength to keep his head clear and to prevent others from seeing through the façade he’d erected.

The guys, as well as Betty and Rose, sat at the bar, eating and chatting away, while Niko had been MIA since the word ‘cut’ had left his mouth.

Vin found a lounge chair in the shade and out of the fray, directly in the path of a fan with one of those water misting attachments. It brought the air temperature down about ten degrees.

Closing his eyes, he took a long drag of the soda, waiting for the rush of sugar and caffeine to give him the boost he needed.

He took a bite of the sandwich. All the food at the resort had been top-notch, but he could have eaten a spoonful of sand, and he wouldn’t have known the difference.

“Hey.” Cat kicked one of the legs of his lounge chair. “What are you doing over here by yourself?”

“I needed a few minutes.”

Cat’s eyes narrowed, her head cocked to the side, assessing. He closed his eyes again, hoping she wouldn’t be able to read him as well as she usually did.

“Want to try that again? This time without lying to my face.”

Vin opened one eye. She had her hands fisted on her hips and if he thought she wouldn’t deck him if the next words out of his mouth were ‘I’m not lying,’ he’d be dead wrong.

Cat scooted another lounger closer. The legs screeched as they skidded across the pool deck. The scraping sound sent goosebumps racing up his back, making his scalp tingle.

Plopping down, she stole the rest of his sandwich and stuffed it into her mouth.

“Hey, I was going to eat that.”

“Liar.” The bread muffled the word. She swallowed hard, then washed the food down with a swallow of his cola. “Something’s been off with you all day. You should have come and hung out with us last night. We had a blast. Fuck that dude for canceling on you.”

“It’s not about that.”

So many thoughts scrambled through his head. He’d need a solid month to sort them out. Only he didn’t have a month. Hell, he didn’t know how long he had before the blackmailer made a move.

Maybe you would know something if you weren’t too chicken shit to text him back.
