Kórnik Castle

The Kórnik Castle (Zamek w Kórniku; www.bkpan.poznan.pl; Tue–Sun, Mar–Apr and Oct–mid-Dec 10am–4pm, May–Sept 10am–5pm), about 20km (12 miles) to the southeast, was built by one of Poznań’s richest, most powerful families, the Górkas, in the 15th century. The castle’s modified appearance both inside and out was effected under the ownership of another important family, the Działyńskis, in the 1800s, one of whom judiciously married Izabela Czartoryska, heiress to the art treasures of that family. The castle houses their collections of art and military regalia, as well as their original furnishings. Beautiful hardwood floors and carved wood portals are found throughout. The most surprising aspect of the interior is its Moorish Hall, based on the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. The grounds beyond the castle were established as an arboretum in the 19th century, with over 2,500 species of plants and trees.
