CHAPTER 6
Ben slept in the next morning and was pleased about it. He wanted to be well-rested for tonightâs confrontation and hoped that Walt had been efficient in dispatching the next assassin. Ben didnât want to wait another day and was as ready as he would ever be.
He didnât finish breakfast until almost ten oâclock and it wasnât until after one oâclock that he had Max and Fast saddled and packed with all the gear.
He still didnât know what he was going to do with the farm. It was still in decent shape and one of its strongest selling points was the year-round creek that flowed across the fields. He hesitated to sell it though, for the memories heâd shared with David if nothing else.
He mounted Max and departed the farm at one-thirty, heading north.

Luther Richter was bored. Heâd been on the train for more than a day now, but he had finally reached Colorado. Heâd never taken such a long train trip before as there were more than enough jobs in St. Louis to keep him and his agents busy. He was still seething about Betty stealing his money and vowed that he would pay her back when he returned to Kansas City on his way back to St. Louis.
He was getting stiff from sitting and napping in the same seat, despite his occasional walks up and down the aisle and the twenty-minute stops at watering and fueling stations. Heâd only brought one pistol on the trip; his Colt 1873 that he kept in his shoulder holster. It was called the Storekeeper model and only had a three-inch barrel, but it still packed a .44 caliber punch.
But he didnât expect to use the revolver for this job; heâd use one of his two favored weapons that he always carried with him. In his right jacket pocket was his garrote made of an eighteen-inch length of piano wire with two small wooden handles. Heâd used it effectively three times, and unlike the ones made of rope, cut into the victimâs throat and would slice through human tissue easily if he used a sawing motion.
His other weapon was just as deadly, but much stealthier. On his left lapel was what appeared to be a decorative button, but it was far more than that. It was the grip of a six-inch long, heavy steel needle that fit into its protective sheath behind the lapel. All he had to do was get close to his target, then quickly grasp the button, slide the needle-like shiv from his lapel and slip it between the manâs ribs, just to the left of center, piercing his heart. Heâd just let the victim fall and hold onto the needle and walk away. Heâd used it twice before and thought it would be the better weapon for this job.
All he had to do was find Gray and smile at him before he ended his life. He could do it with people around because it was almost invisible, but preferred a measure of privacy to be sure that he wouldnât be seen.
