Mirror, Mirror

After Douglas left, I got ready for bed. The excitement of the evening made me feel like it would be difficult to get any sleep. However, the comfort of my bed and all the day’s events knocked me out immediately.

That evening was a restless one. Disturbing visions visited me while I slept. I saw my mother giving me a bath when I was little. She was thinking of how long it would take to dunk me under the water before I stopped breathing. Once she was rid of me, she would be free. The thought of her freedom delighted her. She was crying at the end of the vision while draining the bath water.

Douglas was a welcome sight that evening in my dreams. He was chasing me everywhere, but I wasn’t the least bit interested in being caught. We were all over the globe in very remote locations. There was a frantic look on my face which made me think this wasn’t a game.

The other vision was of my Grammy inside a doctor’s waiting room. She was the only one there. The doctor came out to talk to her, but none of the conversation was audible. Then, my mother came into the waiting room from the back. She looked fine, as there were no bandages or other signs of injury. She was probably sixteen or seventeen.

For the second time in a few short hours, my name was an interruption. “Muriel,” the faint voice chimed. “Muriel, you need to wake up,” Grammy’s voice was clear now. She was shaking me pretty good.

“What, what’s the matter?” I asked groggily.

“It’s almost 8,” she informed me. “You were also loudly mumbling. I didn’t want your grandpa to worry. Were you having visions?”

“It’s not the visions, Gramps or the mumbling that has me concerned as much as the fact that it is 8 in the morning,” I groaned, while putting the pillow over my head. I lifted the pillow back up to ask, “Why are you waking me up?”

“We have lunch in town with Lullabelle today,” she chirped.

“Lunch,” I questioned, “and you think it will take me four hours to get ready? You really need to give me a little credit. I have been dressing myself for years. It won’t take me longer than 2 hours tops.” I placed the pillow back over my head.

Grammy lifted the pillow. “Lou is my oldest friend and I want you to make a good impression,” she explained, ignoring my sarcasm. “I know you have met her many times, but you are growing up so it would be nice if we could all have a conversation together.”

“How about I go to the pool?” I suggested. “You and Lulu should have a nice lunch together.” That was a self-serving suggestion because I thought Douglas may be lifeguarding again. It was a small town and they couldn’t have that many qualified lifesavers, could they?

“No, you get ready. Wear something nice,” she told me. “And lunch isn’t at noon, it’s at eleven.
