I'm always the first one at the bar, at least I used to be. But as I walked in, there was Stacy, Alice, and Eric. All sitting around having a great time, laughing and joking as if they were all old friends. This was not at all as I planned. I wasn't expecting Stacy. Now we couldn't talk about our plan, and I hadn't seen her in months. I felt kinda awkward, thinking rapidly of some lame excuse I was going to give why I had not called her. Also, I wanted to be the one to introduce Eric to Alice, but it seems he beat me to it. Great, they seem to be really hitting it off. Taking a deep breath, I put on my best smile and walked forward.
“Hey!! So glad to see you! Its been ages!” Stacy jumped up and gave me a huge hug. She found a new perfume, this one smelled better than the last. There was no anger in her eyes for me abandoning our friendship. She was acting as if nothing had changed. My heart warmed seeing her and I forgot all about my first thoughts.
They all scooted over, making room for me. I ordered my drink and listened to Stacy continue her story about a snotty socialite she knew.
As the alcohol flowed, we had a great time. We laughed and drank. Eric kept looking over at me, giving me winks. I guessed that meant he thought things were going well with Alice. I just smiled back and tried desperately to ignore the “he is mine” feeling in the pit of my stomach. Especially because he wasn't dressed in work clothes. He had a tight-fitting t-shirt on with some jeans. He was freshly shaven and smelled wonderful. I had to keep repeating to myself ”Just a friend.” I should make that my mantra.
Alice was the first to bring up the plan.
“So Eric, you're going to help us in our little charade to get Barney to talk?”
I was shocked. Stacy was sitting right there and didn't seem confused at all. Before I even had a chance to react, Eric smiled at me and replied “Of course. Anything for a friend.” Ouch, another pang.
Stacy jumped in “It's so wonderful that you are willing to help. Not even knowing Indy. We so loved her and would do anything for her.”
“I'm not doing much, just going along with taking Barney for a planned trip outside the fence excursion and keeping my mouth shut about the 'accidental' run-in with Alice.”
Alice saw the shocked look on my face and jumped in “I just couldn't not tell Stacy. She was part of this and would be brokenhearted if we kept her out.” She seemed to be almost pleading with me.
I gritted my teeth, “Fine, no worries.” But I was thinking to myself, just wait till I get Alice alone. I'm gonna kick her ass for opening her mouth to Stacy.
We made the plan for two weeks from now.
