Chapter Twelve

Amanda

Move Amanda! she yelled at herself, and that did the trick. Her legs started working again and she dashed out of there. On the way to the door she almost tripped over a box of tools but at the last second, she managed to avoid it.

That was close, she thought, relieved. But she wasn't out of the woods yet.

Making sure not to make too much noise while rushing down the stairs, she was almost completely out when the step squeaked underneath her feet and she cursed.

It was too subtle to carry all the way back downstairs, Amanda tried to tell herself getting out. But she guessed there was only one way to find out if she was caught, and that was too see Jacob.

Oh my God, she panicked. She couldn't imagine how their encounter would play out.

Without additional fuss, she got back to the living room as her heartbeat felt like a marching band but there was no Jacob in there.

Amanda opened her mouth to call out for him but stopped herself.

Suddenly she wasn't so sure if she wanted to see him at all.

She could hear him in the kitchen, he was rummaging through it, making too much noise and that made her frown.

What is he doing? she wondered.

Amanda put her cleaning gloves back on and pretended she was cleaning again.

Five minutes passed like that, but Jacob didn't come to see her. And he had to know she was home.

This exact day every month was reserved for cleaning.

Apparently, they were both stalling.

Rising that morning, Amanda very much wanted to confront Jacob once he returned but evidently, she’d lost her nerve.

Seeing what he had, and more importantly, what he hid from her, in the attack shook her to the core and she needed a bit of time to process that new piece of information and find her bearings again.

She knew he was hiding something, but she still wasn't prepared for all that.

Amanda could hear Jacob cursing in the kitchen, clearly searching for something and that made her pause with her own musing.

What is wrong with him now? she wondered in exasperation while having all kinds of mixed feelings, contradictory too, toward him. Yes, she was angry with him, but she was in equal parts worried about him.

But that was love for you. Never simple and definitely not for the weak hearted.

A part of her really expected he would come to find her but the other was dreading that nothing had changed since last night.

And apparently, that was precisely the case, to her sorrow.

At least he's moving about, not staring at the ceiling, she thought, but that didn't bring much comfort to her.

Amanda was hurt once again by being ignored. But it also enraged her.

Could a person really have such a drastic change of heart from one instant to the next? she asked herself.

Well, Amanda was about to find out. Her courage returned and she decided she was done giving him space or trying to be full of understanding or reassuring. She was a human being too, with feelings and not a doormat for him to use.
