Alisha shook her head and tossed back the last of her martini. “I don’t understand where this is coming from. You’re the mover and shaker, the chosen one who spins straw into gold, turns water into wine, and whatever other miracles your fraternity brothers attribute to your good name. How can this woman be beyond your reach?”

Derrick rolled his eyes. “That’s blasphemy, Lish. Don’t let Mom hear you tout the water to wine spiel or you’ll be serving penance for weeks. And I didn’t say Jessica was beyond my reach. I just said I have to exercise a ton of understanding with her, something I’ve never had to do before.”

“Well, that’s true.” She waved their brother over and then flagged down the bartender.

Brett loosened his tie and gave his drink order. “Man, that was one hell of an interrogation. Who knew they’d ask so many damn questions?”

“I knew, which is why I gave you the financial packet to study.” Derrick rubbed his neck, swirling his whiskey and soda before taking a drink. The IRS had questioned a few of the company’s ledgers from seven years ago, back when Mom ran the books, and exercised their right to interview any one of the board members. Of course, they’d chosen Brett, who never involved himself in GCH’s financials, but Derrick had expected this and prepped them over a week ago. “Were they satisfied?”

“Satisfied? I don’t know, but she sure was cute.”

Alisha groaned. “Please tell me you didn’t flirt with the IRS auditor.”

“Okay. I didn’t flirt with the IRS auditor.” Brett flashed Derrick a shit-eating grin. “However, the independent auditor working on behalf of the IRS? You’re damn skippy, I got her phone number.”

Derrick growled low in his throat and finished his drink. Brett’s machinations wouldn’t hurt their upcoming transactions. Everything about the family business was on the up and up, but that didn’t mean he wanted any scandal surrounding it. “Hold off on calling her until after everything is final. Way after.”

Brett frowned. “Damn. What’s going on with your woman? What was her name, Jessica?”

The slightest hint of a smile made it to Derrick’s lips before he quelled it. Hearing her name filled him with warm, gushy feelings. After spending Saturday night and all of Sunday together, he knew without a doubt she wasn’t some fleeting infatuation he’d get over. She was the one. The perfect dichotomy of drive and playfulness to complement his own strengths and desires. In public she was frisky, sharing jokes and tender caresses as they’d strolled around the lake and through the marketplace. Yet in private she was driven with an insatiable desire to pleasure him while demanding to be pleasured in return, an exchange he had absolutely no problem satisfying.

If only he could get her to open up more.

There were things about her life she wouldn’t talk about yesterday, and he hadn’t pushed. They had plenty of time to learn the details of each other’s lives, and before he worried too much about what she didn’t want to say, he had a few secrets to share himself.
