âWould you like to tell me what the bloody hell you think youâve been doing, Freddie?â Pa barked. âDo I have to remind you that you are the future monarch of this country, and here you are, going out without telling anyone, without security, swanning about all over London by yourself!â
My mother was watching him carefully, as though she was waiting for his head to explode. âBertie, calm down. For heavenâs sake, think of your blood pressure.â
âBlood pressure?!â he roared. âWhat the hell do you think all this is doing for my damn blood pressure?â
He had a point. I was high profile, and I was taking an enormous risk being out in public with no one knowing where I was, and with no security with me. But I wouldnât have been able to slip around like I had been with a security detail lurking in the shadows with me. I certainly didnât want to draw more attention to myself than I needed to. I wanted to stay reasonably anonymous for a change.
âPa, I understand completely where youâre coming from.â I tried to soothe him before launching into my reasons as to why I had done it. âBut I needed to do something that wasnât about the press getting to look at what I was doing. I just wanted to be one of the crowd; someone who wouldnât get a second glance when I was out and about.â
He put his head in his hands and looked in despair at my mother. âFrederick, I know this might have escaped your attention, but you are the first in line to the throne. In todayâs climate, you may as well have a target on your back. Why, for the love of God, would you then make it easier for something to happen to you?â
I bowed my head, but I knew there was no point in arguing with him because there was nothing he was saying that wasnât true.
âWhy did you do this, Frederick?â Mama asked, putting her hand over my fatherâs as he sat beside her.
âI met Ben that first day at The Domino Trust. Itâs his familyâs charity and heâs the director. We just hit it off, and I wanted to have a chance to see what the charity really does.â
âAnd is there anything more to it? Do you have feelings for this man?â My mother was a very astute woman.
âYes. I like him, Mama. I like him a lot. We have kissed, and he seems interested in me too.â
My mother smiled warmly. My father looked at me like Iâd just told him Iâd sold my soul to the devil for a blow job. Knowing Pa, he probably thought thatâs exactly what I had done.
Mama squeezed his hand tighter. She could read him better than I could. âI know you understand the responsibilities of the family you have been born into, son. And I know you understand there are things that are expected of you, and rules you need to follow. But I trust your decision.
