Chapter Nine

Anthony

All the way home, I keep thinking how nice it is to spend the evening watching TV with Angel. I used to fantasize about spending a night like this with her. I must admit, I would love to do it again.

It’s easy being with Angel. I don’t have to act like someone I’m not. She’s beautiful, highly intelligent, and will always be completely honest with me. I’ve never trusted another person, except for Mom, Frank, and Angel. Everyone else wants something from me, be it money or favors.

I pull up to my condo to see a bunch of reporters out front. I drive by without stopping. While debating whether to check in to a hotel or crash at the gym, Angel’s beautiful face comes to mind. Leaving her wasn’t easy. Within seconds, I’m dialing her number.

“Hello,” she answers on the second ring.

“Angel, I’m sorry to bother you, but is that offer to stay still available?”

“Of course, everything all right?”

“Reporters are all over my place. I’m headed back to the gym.”

“Oh, my gawd. Don’t they know you need to rest? Come on back. I’ll have the couch made up for you.”

“I’ll be there in a few minutes.” I hang up the phone. The tension of seeing the reporters instantly leaves my shoulders, but a whole different tension sets in. The uneasiness of what happens if I lose. Will the sponsors and fans abandon me after all the hard work I have put in? I will let Mom, Frank, and now Angel down.

I have a ritual of calling my mom the night before every fight to tell her I love her. Mom has a way of reminding me that no matter what, I’m good enough. I put the phone on speaker and call her as I’m driving back to the gym. “Hi Mom. How are you?”

“Anthony, I watched the weigh-ins. You looked good, ready. I was happily surprised not to see the wicked woman sharing the spotlight with you.”

Mom’s laughter brings a smile to my face. She’s never been a fan of Kim’s. “Mom, I fired Kim.”

“Praise Jesus! Did anyone get it on film?”

“Mom, that’s not nice.” I chuckle as I pull into the parking lot of the gym and park.

“Anthony, all kidding aside… what are you going to do without a publicist?”

I clear my throat and get ready for her reaction to my news. Mom has always loved Angel, and honestly, I think she has a crush on Frank as well. “I already hired someone.”

“That’s great news. Is it anyone I know?”

“I hired Angel.”

“Angel…What does Frank think about this? If that man gives you any grief, you let me know, and I’ll be more than happy to come over there and have a talk with him.”

“Frank likes the idea of Angel doing it. He helped me talk her into it.”

“I always knew he was a man of good taste. Fine man, he is. We should have them over for dinner after the fight.”

“I’ll talk to them about it. I need to get to sleep, Mom.
