Chapter 7 - Something More to Fight For

Two hours later, Jake sat very still on the bed in their room, with what Anna had just said ringing in his ears. He had absorbed the problems with the Hunters, the murdered doctor and the two vanished Bears with a fair amount of calm; it pissed him off that the Hunters were being so blatant, and so effective at murder. But then along came the reason why the Hunters had decided to target Anna above any other human.

I'm going to be a Dad.

She didn't have a food allergy. She hadn't caught some bug. She was carrying his child in her belly, and because of that, the Hunters wanted her dead.

Dead for carrying his child.

Dead for mixing her blood with the Bears and walking around with the result inside of her. Another Bear, whom they sought to murder before he or she was even born.

It pulled his emotions in two different directions, each force just as powerful as the other, leaving him stretched thin between them. The wonder and joy of this new life about to enter his could not be underestimated. But neither could his rage at the fresh and determined threat to his mate.

They can try to keep it from happening, but I'll kill every last one of them personally before I will let Hunters hurt Anna... or my child. Because I'm going to be a Dad. I'm going to have a kid, my own flesh and blood, and Anna and I are getting married, and we're going to have a family. We'll have five kids if we want. Six. A dozen. Whatever we decide, and to Hell with the Hunters. They'll never exterminate us. They'll never exterminate my family. I won't allow it!

Anna smiled weakly and waved a hand in front of his face.

“Sweetie? You still with me?”

“Yeah. Still, um, kind of back at the whole 'I'm pregnant' thing. Sorry?”

He smiled at her apologetically.

She hugged him, laying her head on his chest. He could feel her shiver, and thought about her running around in the icy streets of Jackson with only Julia and a mostly unknown new ally to help her.

Esme had come through— and then some, actually taking out three of the Hunters herself. But it still must have been terrifying.

“I'm glad. I'm not glad it's making you queasy, and it pisses me off like crazy that they think of you as a target because of it. But I'm glad.” He kissed the top of her head.

“What do we do now?” she asked softly, keeping her head tucked under his chin. She had practically clung to him since getting home, which was fine. At least this way he didn't look like he was smothering her when he didn't want to let her out of his sight again.

“Esme's getting us reports. She'll be trying to track Mark as well. Maybe even help him get away from the hunters, though at this point I barely feel like the bastard deserves it.” He rumbled low in his chest, and she petted his arm soothingly.
