“Seamus! Alex is here to see you!”

Seamus looked at his bedroom door. He’d needed time to think after Alex was left, but it was hard to put his thoughts into order. He needed to talk to Alex and ask him what he wanted.

Seamus wasn’t sure what he could agree to. He loved Alex, and he wanted to say yes to whatever Alex would want, but could he really? What if Alex only wanted sex? What if Seamus had to watch him marry someone else in the future?

It looked like he was going to find out, since Alex was back.

He got off his bed and opened his bedroom door. He didn’t even have to go downstairs, because Alex was rushing up the stairs, bags in his hand and a wild look on his face, along with a forming bruise. Seamus took a step back. “What happened?”

Alex jumped the last two steps and strode toward Seamus. Something had definitely happened, and Seamus was afraid to find out what. “Are Levi and Dimitri okay?”

Alex blinked and stopped in front of Seamus. “What?”

“Are Levi and Dimitri okay? Your parents? Did something happen?”

Alex’s shoulders slumped, and he rubbed his face. He looked tired, and it made Seamus realize just how much he had on his plate. He’d known it, of course, but it was taking a toll, and he was ready to bet that even when Alex went home to rest, he really didn’t. He probably continued thinking about the council and what they could do to keep the carriers safe.

“Everyone’s fine. Well, except for Karl, and I hope that’s not going to change anytime soon. I regret not punching him harder.”

“Karl?”

“The coyote asshole.”

Ah. The Karl who’d tried to rape Joel in an alley. Now Alex’s bruise made sense.

Seamus stepped to the side and waved Alex in. “Sit down.”

Alex looked lost, and it wasn’t like him, so Seamus suspected that whatever had happened with Karl was worse than he’d thought, and certainly worse than a punch to the face.

He took the bags from Alex’s hand and put them onto the dresser before leading Alex to the bed and pushing him onto the mattress. Once he had Alex’s face at a level where he could examine it, he leaned closer, took Alex’s chin in his fingers, and turned his head so he could take a better look.

“I’m fine,” Alex said.

“It’s going to leave a bruise.”

“I don’t care. As long as there’s no blood, it’s okay.”

“He didn’t break the skin.” Seamus let go of Alex’s chin. “Where else are you hurt?”

“I’m okay,” Alex repeated, but Seamus didn’t believe him.

He reached for Alex’s hand to check his knuckles, but Alex wrapped his fingers around Seamus’ wrist and pulled him close. “Did you have time to think about it?”

It took Seamus a second to realize what he was talking about. “I tried.”

“It’s too soon. I know. I shouldn’t have come back, but I was worried.”

Seamus gently unwrapped Alex’s fingers from his wrist and linked their fingers together instead.
