âSeamus! Alex is here to see you!â
Seamus looked at his bedroom door. Heâd needed time to think after Alex was left, but it was hard to put his thoughts into order. He needed to talk to Alex and ask him what he wanted.
Seamus wasnât sure what he could agree to. He loved Alex, and he wanted to say yes to whatever Alex would want, but could he really? What if Alex only wanted sex? What if Seamus had to watch him marry someone else in the future?
It looked like he was going to find out, since Alex was back.
He got off his bed and opened his bedroom door. He didnât even have to go downstairs, because Alex was rushing up the stairs, bags in his hand and a wild look on his face, along with a forming bruise. Seamus took a step back. âWhat happened?â
Alex jumped the last two steps and strode toward Seamus. Something had definitely happened, and Seamus was afraid to find out what. âAre Levi and Dimitri okay?â
Alex blinked and stopped in front of Seamus. âWhat?â
âAre Levi and Dimitri okay? Your parents? Did something happen?â
Alexâs shoulders slumped, and he rubbed his face. He looked tired, and it made Seamus realize just how much he had on his plate. Heâd known it, of course, but it was taking a toll, and he was ready to bet that even when Alex went home to rest, he really didnât. He probably continued thinking about the council and what they could do to keep the carriers safe.
âEveryoneâs fine. Well, except for Karl, and I hope thatâs not going to change anytime soon. I regret not punching him harder.â
âKarl?â
âThe coyote asshole.â
Ah. The Karl whoâd tried to rape Joel in an alley. Now Alexâs bruise made sense.
Seamus stepped to the side and waved Alex in. âSit down.â
Alex looked lost, and it wasnât like him, so Seamus suspected that whatever had happened with Karl was worse than heâd thought, and certainly worse than a punch to the face.
He took the bags from Alexâs hand and put them onto the dresser before leading Alex to the bed and pushing him onto the mattress. Once he had Alexâs face at a level where he could examine it, he leaned closer, took Alexâs chin in his fingers, and turned his head so he could take a better look.
âIâm fine,â Alex said.
âItâs going to leave a bruise.â
âI donât care. As long as thereâs no blood, itâs okay.â
âHe didnât break the skin.â Seamus let go of Alexâs chin. âWhere else are you hurt?â
âIâm okay,â Alex repeated, but Seamus didnât believe him.
He reached for Alexâs hand to check his knuckles, but Alex wrapped his fingers around Seamusâ wrist and pulled him close. âDid you have time to think about it?â
It took Seamus a second to realize what he was talking about. âI tried.â
âItâs too soon. I know. I shouldnât have come back, but I was worried.â
Seamus gently unwrapped Alexâs fingers from his wrist and linked their fingers together instead.
