CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The monster surged against the doors, snapping the mop handle like a twig. Shards of splintered wood flew a dozen feet from the opening as the creature flowed into the sky bridge. Its tentacles waved menacingly, then shot forward toward Kate.

She was ready for that. A die rolled from her hand, forming itself into a lightning bolt that fried the nearest tendrils and kept going to slam into the monster’s body. It shrieked. Pain, rage, Kate wasn’t sure what the reaction was, but she was keeping it busy.

It came at her again, its tentacles reaching out. Kate backed away from it and cast a force bolt spell. This time, she didn’t aim for the creature but rather for the bridge beneath it. The bolt blasted the floor, wreaking havoc on the support struts holding the bridge aloft. If she was right…

A groaning sound warned her that part of the bridge was collapsing. Kate dove backward just in time. Chunks of concrete and steel plummeted twenty feet to the street below. Fully half the bridge broke apart and crashed to the ground, taking the creature with it.

“You shall not pass,” Kate yelled at the thing.

“Seriously?” James asked.

“Yup. Always wanted to say that.”

“Dork. Watch out!” James threw himself at her, knocking her to the floor in time to avoid a questing tentacle.

The thing was down but not out. She’d knocked it out of the bridge, at least. It was back outside on the street, and it still seemed very interested in making a snack out of her. Glass shattered to her right as another tentacle swept in, breaking through the glass walls.

“The rest of this thing is going to come down any minute, too,” James hollered over the crashing of glass. “We need to get out of here!”

“Not yet. Need to take this thing down before it hurts anyone else.”

More tentacles swung at the bridge. The creature wrapped its limbs around the glass, cracking and shattering one pane after another. Sharp chunks rained down. Kate cast a shield, protecting herself and James from the debris. One of the tentacles swung at her, but although the shield rang like a bell, it held.

She was fast running out of spells, and none were doing much good. Kate wished Rory was there, but she’d told him to leave her alone, then taken off with James. The dragon might know what this beast was, even know how to defeat it. Instead, she was stuck there trying to figure it out the hard way.

More tentacles pounded the shield she’d cast. It was holding, but judging by her growing headache, Kate didn’t think it would last much longer under this sort of abuse.

“James, you got any ideas? This shield isn’t going to hold.”

“Um, ways to kill a giant ooze monster? No idea. It’s wet, so fire seems out. Maybe freeze it?”

“Don’t have any ice spells.”

“What do you have?”

Kate checked the dice remaining in her hand. “Got another force blast, a light spell, and a flame arrow.”

“That’s it? How screwed are we?”

Pretty screwed, Kate thought.
