Chapter 9

The ride was rough on Bailey. She knew without doubt she was losing blood again. She hated the fact that Simpson and Teton were the two she was traveling with. It bothered her even more that she had to depend on them to get her on and off of Hanta. The only saving grace she could see was in knowing that aside from being idiots, the two of them are harmless. At one of the campsites, Simpson comes over to Bailey.

“I am sorry to say this but, I really need to have a look at that wound, Bailey.”

Bailey touches her hand to her gun and she realizes how weak she is. It took everything she had to move her arm. Drawing the gun to shoot was simply not going to happen. Teton walks over to her and Simpson.

“He is right, Bailey. If you don’t let him at least look at the wound, you are going to end up dead. If you die, your chance to go after the men you want is gone. They will be free men who will never pay for their crimes. We all know that isn’t what you want.”

“Get in my saddlebag and hand me the bottle of whiskey I have in there. I am giving to you something I have only given to two people in my life, Simpson. I trust you to do the right thing and nothing more.”

“I assure you, Bailey, I am only interested in making sure you stay alive. Now, take a drink of that whiskey. Take two drinks if you need it. I will need some of it to cleanse this wound.”

Bailey swallowed down two long gulps of the whiskey. It burned all the way down to her empty belly.

“I will need Teton to help me dress the wound. I will personally knock him out if he gets out of line. Just trust me, Bailey.”

“I do trust you or you wouldn’t be near me. Let’s get this taken care of, please.”

Simpson gave Bailey one more drink and then gently laid her back against her saddle. When he opened her shirt, he could see the wound was deep. He continued to pull her shirt loose from the wound. It had dried into the wound. Bailey cried out and tried to push his hand away.

“Teton, you are going to need to hold her down. I need to get her top off completely. It’s the only way I am going to get the bullet out. He removed her top, revealing her bosom. Simpson looked up and saw Teton’s eyes fixed on her chest. Reaching over, Simpson smacked Teton in the head. Teton quickly looked away as he held Bailey’s arms down.

“If you don’t think you can simply help me here without molesting the poor gal, get the hell out of here. I’ll do it myself.”

“No, I will be fine. I am sorry for the stare. It’s been a long time since I have seen a woman that looks like Bailey without a top on.
