CHAPTER 18

Monday—September 5

Hudson was staring at me like I’d completely lost my mind. “He who?” he asked again.

I was going to try to play it cool and get information out of Hudson. But I’d just spilled everything. I only lived with one he. And there was only one he I could possibly be referring to. I pulled back. “You’re going to think I’m way off base, but . . . I think . . .” Was there anything I could say to turn this around? I was pulling a total blank. My mind was scrambled, and my heart was racing too fast. “I think your uncle is planning on killing Athena Quinn. If he hasn’t already. And he’s framing me.” Okay, so we’re doubling down here . . .

“Are you high right now?”

Why did everyone think I was high? Shit, Kehlani. I looked down at my phone. She was calling me back. I pulled my phone to my ear.

“Hazel! Hazel, answer me!” she shrieked.

“I’m okay,” I said. “I’m with Hudson.”

“Well, don’t tell him anything! He might be in on it!”

I felt like she was yelling so loudly that he could hear every word, so I just laughed. “Hudson is not in on it.” But the way he was looking at me . . . like he thought I was insane . . . God, he’s probably in on it. Why was everyone here trying to mess with my head?!

“How do you know?” Kehlani asked.

“Because he’s here with me right now,” I tried to say as calmly as possible. “He helped me get out.”

“Oh. Oooooh,” she said. “Put me on speaker.”

I hit the speaker button.

“Listen here, Hudson,” Kehlani said. “I know your last name, buddy. And I know people who know people, so if you do anything to my girl, I’ll have cops swarming your residence in two seconds flat.”

Not at all what I thought she was going to say. And not at all true. She didn’t know people who knew people. If Hudson was in on it, I was totally fucked.

Hudson laughed. “I don’t know what the two of you think you know . . .”

“There was tomato sauce, and then there wasn’t!” Kehlani yelled. “And Hazel’s fingerprints are on it. And your handsy uncle tried to distract Hazel by touching her butt.”

Hudson lowered his eyebrows as he stared at me. “Excuse me?”

Oh crap. I hadn’t gotten a chance to tell him about that yet. Hudson actually looked really hurt. And the last thing I needed was for him to be mad at me. He was either in on the framing or the only person on this stupid island who was on my side. “Kehlani, I have to go. I’m fine. I’m safe. I love you. Byyyyye!”

“Don’t you dare hang up—”

I hung up the phone. “Hudson . . .”

“Did you hook up with my uncle?”

“What? No. Absolutely not.”

“Your friend just said—”

“I just told you that I think he’s going to murder my boss!” I looked around to make sure Mr. Remington wasn’t anywhere nearby listening in.
