Chapter Five

Scott breathed deeply of the pine-scented air as he made his way back along the wildlife trail that extended northwest from his property line. Yesterday had been a complete wash trying to look into the deer killing, but today he was determined to figure things out. He’d started the day just before sunrise, moving on a path that ran parallel to the marked trail. Although he’d seen close to two-dozen mule deer, he hadn’t run into any early-morning hunters. Which was a good thing, considering it wasn’t hunting season. Although the solo hike hadn’t answered any questions about who left the carcass near the trail, it had given him several hours of alone time to think about the events from the previous night.

The nightmares had been coming with disturbing frequency, becoming alarmingly more vivid, as if each night he was in danger of suffering more burns. The one from which Robby had awakened him had seemed so real he could feel the heat on his back. Scott stopped walking for a minute, gulping air, swallowing back a surge of nausea at the sensation of burning alive.

Thankfully, most of the hours between when he’d deployed his shelter and when they’d medivaced him to Albuquerque were a blur. Somewhere between nightmares lay the truth of what happened, but Scott didn’t want to know. Men were dead, families destroyed, futures lost. It didn’t seem fair that he was here, in this beautiful place, enjoying the life that should have been Danny’s, while his friend—

Breaking off the thought before he could think too much about what Danny was still going through, Scott forced his mind onto the problem of what to do about Robby.

At one point, he’d been nearly certain Robby was about to proclaim his love. Jesus. Two kids. How…how could he not have told Scott before now? Had it really just been a matter of not the right time or was there more that Robby was hiding?

Chewing on his lip, he tried to be fair. Scott could see why Robby hadn’t told him when they were in Albuquerque. His injuries had been life threatening, and that wasn’t exactly something you talk about under those circumstances. But months later, when they’d driven home, things had been so strained between them. Scott had blamed the passing years, but he’d never actually accepted that Robby had a whole nother life. Which was completely unfair to his friend.

For the first time, he thought he might actually understand why Robby insisted Scott accept that he was bisexual. It wasn’t that he was denying their previous relationship, but rather it was validating another part of his life. A part Scott hadn’t lived and had no right to judge.

Two children…a boy and a little girl. Scott rubbed at his chest. What did they look like? Did they have Robby’s cinnamon skin tone? The nearly black eyes? What had their mother—Karen—looked like? What had Rob said their names were? Katrina and Sam. Four years old and seven, if he remembered correctly.
