CHAPTER TWELVE

KELLY STARED AT Sawyer, who stared back. This dance went on for close to a minute, the rest of the patrons at Kingsford Diner oblivious to the staring contest happening in their midst. They hadn’t seen one another all week, so they were grabbing breakfast on Friday morning before work.

Sawyer broke first, squirming uncomfortably on her side of the booth. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“What’s going on with you?”

It wasn’t like she was going to admit that she’d slept with Kelly’s sister. “Not sure what you mean. I’ve been busy at the store, though. Did I forget your birthday or something?” She knew that wasn’t the case, but maybe it would put Kelly off the scent.

“You’re being… evasive,” was the word Kelly settled on. And she wasn’t wrong. Sawyer had cancelled brunch last week, desperate to catch up on sleep after Quinn headed back to the city. Then, she’d skipped the kids’ bowling league on Thursday, though that wasn’t really her fault. “I told you, Shane decided to go fishing, and I had to cover the store on Thursday.”

It was the way Kelly’s eyes narrowed that told Sawyer they weren’t even close to being done with this subject. She tried not to waver under a stare that felt uncomfortably similar to one she’d spent hours memorizing last weekend. “That’s not it.”

“I don’t know what to tell you then.” It also didn’t help that Sawyer was a terrible liar. She could feel the truth trying to claw its way out of her throat.

“I just… feel like we’re a little out of sync lately. I miss you. I hope you know that you can tell me anything.”

Well, that wasn’t fucking fair.

Oh no.

It was happening.

The words started to bubble up. Sawyer couldn’t stop them, though she was trying. This was exactly why she’d been avoiding Kelly all week. She hadn’t thrown up in a long time, but figured this was what Ella felt like after she’d gorged herself on candy, betrayed by her own body. Quinn McKinley had quickly become Sawyer’s favorite indulgence, and now she was paying the price.

Maybe the truth would make her feel better. Maybe… but probably not.

She was about to find out. “I saw Dani at Jazz Fest,” she said before quickly following with, “And I slept with Quinn,” mumbling that part in the hopes Kelly would think she’d misheard.

Kelly’s eyes went wide, fingers stilling against her coffee cup. Finally, she blew out a breath. “Do those things have anything to do with one another?”

There was no point in lying to Kelly. That wasn’t the type of friendship she wanted them to have. “Maybe, at first. But then I slept with Quinn again, and that definitely had nothing to do with Dani.” Maybe that last part was overkill, but it was too late to take it back now.

To her friend’s credit, she was keeping herself more composed than Sawyer would have been if the roles were reversed. Kelly picked up her coffee and took a long sip, not saying anything.
