Davis had been right, Las Penas appeared a well-civilized settlement. Upon conversing with the port captain, the skipper returned with the news that a steamer would indeed be through the area in a week, ten days at most. Davis insisted that he and his crew would stay in Las Penas until his passengers were safely aboard the northbound steamer.

Betsy, still recovering from her ordeal at sea and her immense grief over Jake’s departure, remained mostly in her cabin, crying and feeling sorry for herself. After a few days, however, she began to spend time in the afternoons on deck with the others. Despite her determination to remain angry and depressed, the joviality of Davis and Cooper was contagious, and gradually she began to enjoy their companionship. The guilt she carried still weighed on her, though, and Cooper gently reminded her several times that Atkinson would have taken Margaret no matter what.
