CHAPTER EIGHT

JAKE STILLED, INSTANTLY clearing his mind of their conversation, and watched Isobel’s expression.

‘Caro, are you OK...? Yes, Emily is fine. Super-fine and absolutely adorable... What’s happening...? Jake’s here. I’m going to put you on loudspeaker.’

She suited action to word, placing the phone on the table, and they both leaned forward slightly.

‘I’m going to meet with Martin tomorrow.’

He and Isobel exchanged glances. ‘Is that a good plan?’ he asked.

‘I have to meet him. I can’t run and hide for ever. I’m going to get him to agree to leave us alone.’

‘How?’ Isobel asked as her face creased with worry.

‘I’ll explain I’ll get a legal injunction, that if he comes anywhere near me he’ll end up back in jail. I’ve got a lawyer.’

‘Then maybe the lawyer should handle this,’ Jake suggested.

‘Where are you meeting him?’ Isobel asked.

There was a hesitation. ‘At his house.’

‘Why not at the lawyer’s office?’ Jake asked.

‘Because Martin refused to do that.’

‘Caro—’ Isobel’s voice held a plea now ‘—it’s not safe to go and meet Martin alone.’

‘I haven’t got a choice.’

‘Yes, you do. Meet somewhere else. In a public space.’

‘He won’t do that. And I have to see him. I have to get him to promise to leave us alone. Otherwise—’

‘I know, Caro. I know. But you have to take someone with you.’

‘It will be OK. I have to do this my way. I’ll let you know how it goes and then I’ll come for Emily. Please give her a huge hug from me and tell her I will see her soon. And thank you, both of you, for looking after her.’

With that she was gone.

Isobel’s face had paled to chalk; she placed her hand in a protective curve over her tummy and stared at him wide-eyed. ‘I can’t let her go in there alone. It’s not safe...’

‘I don’t get it.’ Jake started to pace. ‘Why is she seeing him at his house? Why won’t she take the lawyer with her? Why doesn’t she insist he—?’

‘Because it doesn’t work like that!’ Isobel’s voice was taut; her words whipped through the air and halted him in his tracks. ‘She can’t.’

‘Why not?’ Frustration laced his tone—he knew Caro, she was smart, funny, a bit quiet but definitely not stupid. And this was stupid—to go and meet a violent man in his house, alone. Isobel must see that.

‘You don’t understand what it’s like, Jake.’ Now she was pacing too, each step nervy and terrified and scared.

‘Then tell me. Tell me why she is walking into danger.’ Frustration fuelled his anger. ‘It’s a stupid thing to do.’

‘Don’t be so judgemental. It’s not that easy for Caro.’

He studied the fear in her hazel eyes and saw its depth, but also saw an understanding that he knew was born of experience.

Now he ceased his strides, stood and leant back on the kitchen counter and instinct made his voice gentle. ‘OK. Explain.’ He sensed Isobel’s fear for Caro had sent her to the edge of a personal hell.

She halted in front of him. ‘Caro is scared of him and she is trying to confront that fear.
