NINE

Officer Volt sat in Cade’s kitchen, sipping coffee. Cade didn’t like having the guy there, he missed Ashley’s reassuring presence. Oh, he trusted this cop could protect Danny. The problem was that he felt more comfortable asking Ashley to help with caring for his nephew. Because she was a woman? The thought made him wince.

When his phone rang, he quickly grabbed it. Relief washed over him upon seeing Ashley’s number on the screen. “Ashley? Everything okay?”

“Yes, of course.” Was there a sense of impatience in her tone? As if she didn’t like his questioning her ability? “I’m on my way to the ranch.”

“Great. I’ll let Officer Volt know.” Hearing his name, the officer quirked a brow. “See you soon.”

“Yep.” Ashley disconnected from the call.

“You heard?” he asked. Officer Volt didn’t say anything, but continued to sip his coffee.

Danny squirmed and began to cry. Cade quickly lifted the baby from his seat and carried him down the hall to the nursery to change him.

He liked when Danny was awake and looking up at him. He hadn’t taken the time to read all the baby books Melissa had gotten, so he wasn’t sure how long it would be until his nephew began to smile or track to a voice.

Did his nephew miss his mother?

His hope for a quick resolution to Melissa’s kidnapping was fading fast. What if they didn’t find her? What if the kidnapper had hurt her? Or worse? He couldn’t imagine how he’d cope with raising Danny without his mother.

Shying away from those thoughts, he did his best to stay positive. He needed to have faith in God, and in Ashley, and the rest of the Elk Valley police department.

“We’re going to be fine, right, big guy?” He smiled when his nephew accidently hit himself in the face. An expert at changing diapers, Cade finished the job and lifted Danny into his arms. The baby curled against him in a simple act of faith and trust.

Returning to the kitchen, Cade stared out at the barn. He desperately needed to get out there to care for his horses. The few chores he’d been able to accomplish weren’t enough. Not by a long shot.

Volt stood and stretched his muscles. “Hanson will be here in five minutes. I’m heading out to the squad car. You and the kid should stay inside.”

“Fine.” Cade didn’t bother to object. Since Danny was still awake, he made a bottle, anticipating he’d soon announce his desire to eat. Sure enough, Danny began making squeaking noises then let out a full-blown wail.

“I’m coming, big guy.” He shook the bottle to dissolve the powdered formula in the warm water then sat to feed the boy. Danny’s dark eyes clung to his, melting his heart.

Ten minutes later, Ashley and Ozzy arrived. She looked satisfied, as if the interview had gone well.

“Did you get some good information?” he asked.

She nodded but did not elaborate. “I’m sure you’d like to head out to the barn.”

“Yes, I really need to tend to the horses.” He glanced down at Danny.
