SUNNY

It had been a few days since the date was Gary and he had acted strange ever since. I tried to brush it off as he was tired from all the ranch work, but he hadn't said two words to me in three days. I had tried to talking to him about what was bothering him, but he kept telling me everything was fine and going about his business so I decided to leave it alone. I tried to get him off my mind by spending more time with the kids and helping them with their homework. In just a few more weeks school would be out for the summer and I was excited to see what exciting adventures we could have. This had been one of the most exciting nanny jobs I had taken and I was excited to be a part of the kids having a fun summer.

“I don’t know why, but Dad has been in a bad mood for three days now,” Declan said as he spooned cereal into his mouth.

Gary was already in the field when I arrived that morning and I wondered if he had went out so early just so he could avoid me. With what Declan just said I was beginning to think I was right.

“I’m sure it has nothing to do with you or your sister, it’s probably ranch stuff,” I said as I tried to reassure him that it wasn’t his fault.

Declan nodded and continued eating his cereal as I started loading the dishwasher. Once both of the kids were fed and they finished getting ready for school, they headed for the bus stop and I headed outside. I was going to offer to help Gary with ranch chores so he couldn't avoid me anymore. I knew there had to be something wrong and it had to have been about the date because normal people didn't avoid the person they liked.

“Would you like some help?” I offered as I approached the fence.

“No, it’s okay, I’ve got it. Thanks for offering,” he said as he tossed a large forkful of hay into the pasture for the horses.

He threw the fork back into the wheelbarrow and started to move down the fence line headed to the back pasture where the cows graze.

“Are you going to tell me what the hell is wrong with you?” I asked bluntly not bothering to hide my irritation.

“What are you talking about? You’ve got a lot of nerve talking to your boss that way,” he said sternly.

“Well, my boss had a lot of nerve taking me out then sleeping with me and ghosting me basically,” I retorted as I crossed my arms over my chest.

Gary stopped dead in his tracks and turned to look at me. The look he gave me was one of pure anger. I watched him for a minute as his facial expression changed and softened. He sighed deeply before opening his mouth.

“I know I haven't really been around much or said anything much the past few days, but the ranch chores have been a lot on me.
