‘I am your Mareecha,’ I told Kumbhakarna in a deadpan voice.

Mareecha was Ravana’s deer to slaughter, the rakshasa who died an animal’s death for his master’s mad passion for a woman who refuses to be his. And here I was, called upon to present myself to and spy on the most powerful man on earth. A man who in all likelihood knew I worked for the rakshasa who stole his wife.

‘You are my Mareecha,’ he replied, nonchalantly chewing his meat and smiling.

On the face of it, Kumbhakarna was my master, but over the years, I had graduated from faithful advisor to trusted spy to closest confidante to the understanding brother he never had. But we were not equals and I obeyed his orders, as he did Ravana’s.

‘A night full of dreams dies, only to give birth to a fresh, new dawn. Maybe your death will be an awakening of great significance,’ he said mock-heavily.

‘You’ll miss me,’ I said.

‘I’ve loved and lost before. Besides, if you are unsuccessful, many more loved ones will be lost.’

‘My success? How can anything with death written all over it be successful?’

Now, Kumbhakarna laughed uproariously. He then spoke in a tone of gentle concern: ‘My dear Two-Face, do you really think Rama will kill you? Why would Rama – dharma’s fiercest protector, the man who cannot sin – harm a man who is of no direct harm to him? Mark my words: even if Rama knows who you are – and there is a more-than-slim chance he doesn’t – he will take your life only if you explicitly harm him.’
