Chapter 12

Mike

Day 13

Wednesday, November 9th

“What the—” Derek said under his breath, and for a moment, Mike stared back at John, wondering what in the hell they had just walked into. In his peripheral vision, he saw Derek remove his pistol, so he did the same.

“John, what happened here?” Mike asked the man cautiously, realizing John was either confused, on the brink of a breakdown, or maybe both. John was in his late twenties, of average height, and thin. His face looked even thinner than normal, and Mike barely recognized him.

John finally seemed to comprehend who was speaking to him. He stared at Mike through his one good eye, and then turned his head slowly to look at his daughter as if he hadn’t heard her screaming all that time. “They killed my wife,” he said simply and gestured at her body through the window. She had obviously been there for several hours, and the intruders were most likely long gone, but just the same, they immediately began to scan the front yard. Mike would have noticed tire tracks or boot tracks in the front yard, so he felt pretty certain there was no longer a threat here.

John walked over to the closest chair in the living room and sank into it, leaving Mike and Derek standing at the open door.

“Who killed your wife, John?” Mike asked over the screaming toddler, as Derek finally shut the door, convinced the intruders weren’t in the vicinity. The two men followed John into the living room. They exchanged a worried glance, but neither knew what to do. John still seemed to be in shock and didn’t respond, and his daughter was still wailing, so Mike went over to the little girl to see if she would allow him to comfort her. As he approached, she held up her chubby arms to be lifted, and Mike quickly obliged. She appeared to be around two years old and, other than being cold and upset, seemed to be unharmed. She stopped crying as soon as she was in his arms. Her skin was cold to the touch. The little girl wrapped her arms around Mike’s neck, and he hugged her back, wondering what kind of horrors she’d been exposed to.

Derek sat down in a chair next to John while Mike took a seat on the couch, comforting the baby. Gently, he asked John what his daughter’s name was.

That seemed to snap him out of his stupor. “That’s Emery,” he answered. “I don’t know what to do for her.”

“It’s okay man, we’ve got her,” Mike said. “Do you have some diapers somewhere? Let me change her real quick and find her some warm clothes, okay?”

John nodded and pointed limply at a box of diapers on the dining room table. His knuckles were swollen and caked with dried blood, just like his face and t-shirt.

Mike carried Emery over to the dining room table, grabbed a diaper and some wipes, and brought her back to the couch where she seemed grateful to him for changing her, even though Mike was a stranger.
