Chapter Thirteen

Kerry

* * *

The elevator doors open, and I see Helix step out into the penthouse looking different somehow. I can’t place what’s changed, but I’ve known him long enough to know when something’s happened with him.

Without a word, he walks into the living room and sits down next to me. A feeling of abject sadness comes off him in waves.

As he silently loosens his tie, I ask, “What’s wrong, baby? You look like you got bad news. What is it?”

He takes a deep breath in and lets it out in a rush before he shakes his head. “It’s nothing. Well, not nothing, but nothing I can’t handle.”

“Did you have a fight with your brothers?” I ask, taking my best guess first. Helix and his brothers spend ninety percent of their time fighting.

I don’t get an answer other than him shaking his head, and then he abruptly stands up and walks away toward his office. This isn’t how I had hoped our night in would go. I’m used to Helix being moody. He swings from ecstatic to enraged faster than any other person I’ve ever met, but it doesn’t feel like that’s what’s going on tonight.

When I follow him, I find him sitting at his desk with five lines of coke laid out and him rolling a hundred up to get the party started. Again, not what I had hoped for tonight. Before I can ask him if he wants to talk about whatever’s bothering him, he snorts a line and then another.

Looking up at me, he shakes his head and points down at the top of his desk. “Want some?”

“No, thanks. I was hoping we were doing a quiet night in tonight. I guess not,” I answer, not even trying to hide my sulking over my demolished plans.

“I’m not planning on asking anyone else if they want to get in on this, if that’s what you mean.”

As I watch him snort the rest of the lines, I debate whether I should explain that’s not what I meant or leave it alone. Helix normally borders on mercurial. Sky high Helix is that times ten.

When he sits back in his chair and closes his eyes to take a deep breath in, I ask, “Do you want to talk about what’s wrong?”

Helix swallows hard, making his Adam’s apple bob up and down, and then shakes his head. As he slides his tie from around his neck, he winces like something hurts but still says nothing.

I can’t do this all night with him. Once the coke kicks in, he’ll be the best time around, and then he’ll come down and God only knows what he’ll be like since something’s eating at him. I don’t think it has anything to do with me, but I’m not sure I want to stick around to find out.

“Maybe I’ll just head out for the night. You look like you want to be alone.”

Before I can take a step toward the door, his eyes fly open and he’s up on his feet to stop me.
