Chapter Thirteen
Kerry
* * *
The elevator doors open, and I see Helix step out into the penthouse looking different somehow. I canât place whatâs changed, but Iâve known him long enough to know when somethingâs happened with him.
Without a word, he walks into the living room and sits down next to me. A feeling of abject sadness comes off him in waves.
As he silently loosens his tie, I ask, âWhatâs wrong, baby? You look like you got bad news. What is it?â
He takes a deep breath in and lets it out in a rush before he shakes his head. âItâs nothing. Well, not nothing, but nothing I canât handle.â
âDid you have a fight with your brothers?â I ask, taking my best guess first. Helix and his brothers spend ninety percent of their time fighting.
I donât get an answer other than him shaking his head, and then he abruptly stands up and walks away toward his office. This isnât how I had hoped our night in would go. Iâm used to Helix being moody. He swings from ecstatic to enraged faster than any other person Iâve ever met, but it doesnât feel like thatâs whatâs going on tonight.
When I follow him, I find him sitting at his desk with five lines of coke laid out and him rolling a hundred up to get the party started. Again, not what I had hoped for tonight. Before I can ask him if he wants to talk about whateverâs bothering him, he snorts a line and then another.
Looking up at me, he shakes his head and points down at the top of his desk. âWant some?â
âNo, thanks. I was hoping we were doing a quiet night in tonight. I guess not,â I answer, not even trying to hide my sulking over my demolished plans.
âIâm not planning on asking anyone else if they want to get in on this, if thatâs what you mean.â
As I watch him snort the rest of the lines, I debate whether I should explain thatâs not what I meant or leave it alone. Helix normally borders on mercurial. Sky high Helix is that times ten.
When he sits back in his chair and closes his eyes to take a deep breath in, I ask, âDo you want to talk about whatâs wrong?â
Helix swallows hard, making his Adamâs apple bob up and down, and then shakes his head. As he slides his tie from around his neck, he winces like something hurts but still says nothing.
I canât do this all night with him. Once the coke kicks in, heâll be the best time around, and then heâll come down and God only knows what heâll be like since somethingâs eating at him. I donât think it has anything to do with me, but Iâm not sure I want to stick around to find out.
âMaybe Iâll just head out for the night. You look like you want to be alone.â
Before I can take a step toward the door, his eyes fly open and heâs up on his feet to stop me.
