And of course, as mentioned earlier in this book, though never once referenced in Making a Murderer, the contents of Teresa Halbach’s purse—her cell phone, camera, and PDA—were found in Steven’s own burn barrel. Another of Steven Avery’s nephews, Brendan’s seventeen-year-old brother, Blaine, saw his uncle Steve place a white plastic garbage bag into his burn barrel, approximately twenty feet to the north and east of his front door, on the afternoon of October 31st, and then observed smoke and the telltale signs of active burning. Another witness, a friend of Earl Avery’s, Robert Fabian, saw a fire coming from that same burn barrel that afternoon and smelled burning plastic.

No cop could stand over the burn barrel, stoking it and putting tires and other flammables in it while the electronics burned, without someone seeing them. Someone, two someones, did see Steven. Why should we ignore the testimony of these witnesses? Why should we discount the testimony of experts, from different agencies and different disciplines, who agree that Teresa was burned at the burn pit behind Steven Avery’s garage? Grim and plain—that was the nature of these truths. They may not be as exciting as conspiracy theories, but they do have the virtue of being supported by facts.
