The next day, the roads werenât any better. Ava couldnât get to where she wanted and needed to go. At seven in the morning, she was pacing the floor of her hotel room like a caged animal. So many things swirled through her mind that had nothing to do with her current case that she couldnât hold her concentration on it for more than a couple of minutes at a time.
At eight, she called Robert Mitchell and left another message for him to call her. At five after, she called Elsie Halliday and got the answering machine. She walked to the window and looked out at the thick covering of snow everywhere. The roadway was no longer distinguishable from the rest of the landscape. If it werenât for the electric lines and poles alongside the road, she would have lost track of it at every point where the land on the sides was flat.
The cars in the parking lot looked mired in with snow reaching the bottoms of their doors, and there were no fresh tracks in or out of the front that she could see. No cars had come or gone since the commotion of the wreck the night before, and the tracks from that incident were covered.
The snow had slowed some, but not nearly enough for her to be out driving along the mountainous roads safely. She huffed and turned back to her evidence tables. What could she constructively do with her time before the snowplows cleared the roads?
âI could be in South Africa trailing my mother in the heat instead of being stuck here, mired in the snow of the Kentucky hills. Thatâs what I could be doing,â she grumbled as she pulled out a chair.
She looked through the files again, checked her list of interviewees again, and scanned the photos for the hundredth time without finding anything new. No connections. The crimes had happened in the same house. That was the only tenuous connection evident.
Xavier had access to surveillance footage on which he thought he might have seen Molly. Neither he nor Dean had not called Ava back about it, which meant either they werenât finished rendering and analyzing it, or they hadnât even gotten to it yet.
I know Molly. I know the way she moves, walks, holds herself, even the tilt of her head. I know everything about her. If I could just see that footage, she thought, slumping back in her seat.
She dialed Dean at nine. She didnât know what other cases heâd be working, or whether heâd be doing anything with his cousin, but it was worth a shot. The phone rang and rang with no answer. She hesitated for a moment, wondering if it was worth the attempt to try to sweet-talk Xavier into giving her more information. Not that she was entirely sure that sweet-talking would even have an effect on him.
âXavier,â he said without inflection the moment he picked up the phone.
âXavier, hi. Itâsââ
âAva, I know. Caller ID. What do you need, Ava?â
âWell, I called to ask if you had found out anything on that footage yet.
