The only real problem the company had to face was the unseasonal and incessant rain, which bedevilled Donen and caused him to run over schedule. It made Fred and Audrey’s romantic pas de deux in Chantilly, where they dance on grass, a difficult and muddy grind. Audrey remarked, ‘Here I’ve been waiting twenty years to dance with Fred Astaire, and what do I get? Mud!’ But the wet weather also proved serendipitous to the shooting of the balloon sequence: Donen was forced to film in a downpour, umbrellas were brought into the scene and it achieved an originality beyond the intended image in spring sunshine.
