CHAPTER NINETEEN

Breakfast was an ordeal the kind of which Leanna had never expected to experience. She could barely swallow her food as Sir Benedict watched her steadily with his beady eyes. She could not imagine what he thought they had to discuss. After all, when the marriage was being arranged, he had not bothered to discuss it with her then. He had simply arranged it with her father.

She didn’t know how she felt about her father at that moment. He was just as responsible for this mess as Sir Benedict…and herself. She should simply have turned down the marriage proposal… it would have been within her rights to do so.

Instead, she had made a hash of things by running away, right into the arms of a rake and a con man. A man she longed for with a fervency that was embarrassing. A man she would likely never see again.

She swallowed hard, suppressing a sob.

“You’re thinking of him, are you not?”

She jumped, startled at the voice. She could not look Sir Benedict in the eye without the risk of bursting into tears.

“I beg your pardon,” she asked - to buy herself time.

“Don’t feign ignorance, my girl. You are not half as good at these games as you think you are.” Sir Benedict’s voice was light as if he was joking with her, but Leanna knew better.

I suppose you are, she thought but did not say. She was not so stupid as to anger him unnecessarily, and bowed her head, focusing on her food. She had to survive until rescue came, had to believe that he was on his way.

Surely Kaiden will not leave me here?

Once breakfast was over, Sir Benedict led her to his study, where he bid her sit. She tentatively lowered herself onto the chesterfield, wondering what she was in for. Sir. Benedict settled into his leather armchair, steepled his fingers, and focused his beady eyes on her.

“Now, I’m going to ask you a question, and you will answer me honestly.”

Leanna’s heart sped up. “Alright.”

Sir Benedict’s voice grew hard. “Were you in flagrante with this false priest?”

Leanna almost jumped, so startled by his blatancy. “Uh…I am a lady!”

“So what? Does that make you different from any roadside Paphian? I assure you, it does not. You have the same needs, the same desires… the same lack of sense.”

Leanna’s eyes were wide with shock. “Well…I never!”

“Answer my question,” the knight added sharply.

“I have answered it.” Leanna retorted, her back stiffening with anger, “How dare you treat me this way?”

“I can treat you however I want. I am to be your husband.”

“We are not married!”

“Yet!”

“I might well refuse.”

He threw back his head and laughed as she kept wide eyes fixed upon him. Then he stopped abruptly to favor her with an evil glare. “Do not imagine for one minute that I would ever let you go. Do you think your father can get you out of this? He cannot. I own him.”

Suddenly, he relaxed, sinking back into his armchair and smiling as if he had not just threatened her.
