Chapter 5 – Japanese Fairy Tales

Like the rest of the world, Japanese culture has a rich tradition of what we have come to know as fairy tales. These tales consist of those cautionary stories designed to scare children or teach them valuable lessons about the world. They are filled with strange magic and memorable characters who are wise and terrifying, amusing and silly, beautiful and grotesque. There are numerous collections of these tales. Illustrated versions are available. With the popularity of Japanese animation, many of these tales are available in comic book collections.

Many of these tales are quite old and existed in the oral tradition long before anyone wrote them down. Some tales appear to be for general amusement, and others carry lessons or morals.

Yet, as with fairy tales from around the world, the sheer enjoyment we can derive, young and old, from the fantastic stories of magic, strange creatures and monsters, and the unlikely events still entertain us even if we are not familiar with all the customs evoked throughout the tales.
