Chapter 16

~ Confusion ~

As she closed the door, sadness overcame her. Tears filled her eyes, and she went to get a tissue. She had hoped Renee would stay with her tonight, but she also understood why she didn’t. At least, she thought she understood.

Was Renee being thoughtful about me working tomorrow? I wouldn’t have cared! I want to be with her. I want to feel her touch me, she thought.

She moved through her apartment, locking the doors and turning off the lights, then moving to her bedroom. The empty bedroom she would once again be in, alone.

Kris had been alone for the last 6 years, ever since Romy had left her. She had dated a couple of women and even slept with one, but it didn’t last. She was lonely, and Renee was so beautiful and caring! She felt something for her and wanted to explore that further, but it seemed like Renee was reluctant. Sure, she had told her about the one relationship that hurt her so badly, and she could understand her hesitation, but I won’t do that!

“I won’t hurt you, Renee!” she said to the empty room.

Removing her clothing, she climbed into bed and turned off the light. Sleep didn’t come easy for Kris that night, and when her alarm went off, she awoke feeling groggy and listless.

When she arrived at work, her friend, Abby, asked, “So, how was your time off?”

The smile that Kris gave said it all.

“Did you get laid?” Abby asked with excitement in her voice.

Kris shook her head, “No, but I had a wonderful time with her. We went to Catalina for the day. She took me on a helicopter ride around the island and we did the glass-bottom boat. We also had a wonderful meal, then we went back to my place and watched a movie and had some wine.”

Abby looked at her expectantly, “And?”

“And nothing. She went home.”

Abby’s face fell, “She went home? What the hell? Why?”

“Because I had to work this morning. She said she didn’t want to keep me up all night,” Kris knew Renee hadn’t said that per se, but hoped that was her intention.

Abby’s face relaxed some, “Well, she’s thoughtful!” she said, taking the positive from the comment.

Kris nodded, “Yes, she is that! And she’s gorgeous!”

Abby laughed, “Honey, you’ve got it bad, don’t you?”

Kris blushed, but nodded, “I really do, and it’s not been long enough to ‘have it bad’! What am I doing? Am I so lonely that I’m falling for the first woman who pays attention to me? Is that it?”

“Sweetie, I can’t answer that. Only you can do that, but if you’re questioning yourself, then maybe you should slow down some and give it time. See how things play out.”

“You’re right, but I’m not sure I can slow down! I wanted her so much last night that I cried myself to sleep!”

“Oh, Kris!” Abby said, taking her into her arms and holding her. “Just be careful, honey. I love you and I don’t want to see you get hurt again.
