CHAPTER NINETEEN
Rebekah covered her mouth, unnerved by the grotesque scene. There was so much blood. Nausea worked its way through her stomach, so she flew from the diner and made for the elevator. Swallowing back the bile rising in her throat, leaving a bitter taste, she slapped the button for the second floor. When the elevator opened, she charged through the hall, fished the key from her pocket, and burst into her room. Vomit erupted from her mouth just as she flipped the toilet lid open. Harsh, burning liquid rushed through her throat, splattering the porcelain bowl as it evacuated. A weakness settled into her body, crippling her legs.
She took heavy, gasping breaths between episodes, fighting back the swell of puke amassing in her throat and choking her. The image kept replaying in her head of that manâs flailing arm, and sheets of blood whipping through the air. It fueled her nausea, and she vomited until nothing remained but acid. Her legs curled under her, prickly and numb, and her arms dropped weakly to her sides as the onslaught diminished. She reached for a towel to wipe the debris from her face and flushed the toilet to relieve herself of the smell.
She was languidâfamishedâbut her appetite was absent. So much for the chicken. Maybe some crackers would be a safe bet.
Hoisting herself up, she closed the lid of the toilet and gripped the sink to steady herself. The walk to the bed was arduous, but she made it. Digging through her backpack, she retrieved a sleeve of crackers and another bottle of water. She gulped down several swallows of the drink to remove the vile taste in her mouth before unwrapping the crackers and nibbling on one cautiously. The salty flavor was welcomed, but the dry crumble soaking up the moisture in her mouth was dissatisfying. Still, she stomached it enough to eat through half of the sleeve, restoring some semblance of strength.
The clock on the bedside table showed it was nearly 9:00 p.m. She groaned and collapsed back on the bed. âWhy canât this day be over?â
Exhaustion consumed her as she laid back. It was as if the very sheets of the bed swallowed her. Dizziness sent the room into a spinning frenzy. The injury on her head pulsed, shooting waves of pain through her skull. Closing her eyes, she palmed her head with a shaky hand, but the motion continued, unsettling her stomach once more.
A chilled wind crept through the room, and goosepimples crawled over her flesh. Her body shivered wildly as the frozen air gripped her. Her eyes opened to complete darkness, challenging her knowledge of whether sheâd even opened them at all. Save for a column of breath exiting her mouth, lit by an unseen source of light, the space was stark.
âHello?â she called, chased by an echo through the cavernous void.
Glancing around, and as far as she could sense, she was alone but certainly no longer in the hotel. At least, her consciousness was no longer there.
