Chapter Four

There was an atmosphere of expectancy hanging over the Triangle S. Drugget’s men had been growing a little restless. Most of them were not accustomed to ranch work and they left the regular running of the spread to Schandler’s cowhands. They had been looking for action and it seemed it was in the offing. Cage Drugget had sent word that everyone was to be available in the next couple of days and riders had been despatched to bring in his gunslicks from the surrounding territory. He sat at a table in the living room of the ranch house looking at a map when there was a knock on the door and Schandler appeared.

‘You wanted me?’ he asked.

Drugget cast a cold eye on him. There were few people in whom he ever placed any trust and Schandler wasn’t one of them.

‘Yes,’ he said. ‘I want you to ride into Little Fork and take a look around. Call in at the marshal’s office. Make nice with him.’

‘Make nice with him? Why would I do that?’

Drugget breathed heavily.

‘Use your brains, if you got any. After that bank job it won’t hurt just to lull him into a false sense of security. Kinda show him the Triangle S is on the side of the law.’

‘You think he’s got suspicions?’

‘No, I don’t think that. But like I say, it don’t do any harm to keep him sweet.’

Schandler had a feeling that he had already, perhaps, pushed things too far.

‘Sure,’ he said. ‘I see what you mean. I’ll get saddled up and leave right away.’

He turned on his heels and walked through the door. Drugget watched him till he was gone and then he turned back to the outspread map.
