Jo of All Tides

Jolene

Courtney's cough was gone after two days. Her immune system had done its job. During that time, she slept a great deal, and I made sure she was fed and watered like a special houseplant. When she was sleeping, I worked on my books.

My uninvited but now-welcome guest was in the shower, and it was all I could do to focus on anything other than the kiss we'd shared. My body tingled with the memory of her warm, silky mouth on mine. How pliable her lips had been. Court let me take full control of our kiss.

I'd never enjoyed Giselle's kisses. Not kisses, at all, really. More like she used her mouth to bruise and puncture. Draw blood.

I perished the memory with a shake of my head.

Court made me feel things entirely foreign. I thought I'd known what it felt like to be safe in someone else's arms. I had known desire and the touch of a woman, but it was all fleeting and false. Giselle enforced her own desires, and sullied mine by assault, and harsh, vise-like fingers.

The desire I felt for Courtney was nothing like my initial desire for Giselle.

The nature of Courtney's desire for me was evident in her kiss. It was yielding, yet decisive, stealing my breath. I would be happy to die with her mouth on mine.

I brought my fingers to my lips, held onto the phantom of hers, and was tugged back to the present when Courtney emerged from the bathroom.

Rubbing a towel on her hair, she said, "That crab was delish. Is it too soon to have crab again?"

"Not for me. I eat crab like most people eat chicken. It's a staple."

"Awesome. Any chance you could show me how to snag those babies?"

"Oh," I said. "Sure." I was taken aback by her interest in what was, for me, a mundane but important aspect of my life here. Other than Berta, no one else had ever cared about me and my life. Am I dreaming? I smiled. "Why don't you get dressed and I'll grab my waders and other tools, then we can head out."

It was still low tide, and there was just enough time to do some clamming while we waited on the tide to rise for the crab.

Minutes later, I pulled the four-wheeler out, and hooked up the trailer, tossed in my various foraging implements, and pulled it around to the cabin door.

Court stepped outside, dressed in a pair of my jeans and a flannel shirt. The jeans looked like pedal pushers on her taller frame.

"I hope you don't mind." She indicated the clothes.

"Not at all." I stifled a laugh.

"What?"

"Nothing. They're a perfect fit."

Court looked down at her high-water pants, almost high enough for crabbing, and smirked. "I think I look good."

I felt my face heat up. "I agree."

"Glad to hear it. So I'm ready if you are. I've already missed my kickboxing class, so the fresh air and exercise will do me good."

Kickboxing. Interesting. That was obviously where she'd gained all that lean muscle.
