Routes and Names

The weather has to be pretty bad to keep climbers off the grit. Most days the crags on Gardom’s and Birchen edges are embroidered with ropes, lines running back to the 19th century and to the discovery of the area as an escape from the town. It’s not quite the circus that is Stanage or Froggatt, where the embroidery is often a tangle. That’s part of the attraction. A chance of close attention, for extension and release at the end of a route. It’s one of the quieter corners of the Peak, but climbers have still managed to inscribe more than four hundred route names into Gardom’s. Names like Lightning Wall, Four Horsemen, The Eye of Faith, Gossip, Rumour, Evasion, Raging Insomnia, Mark’s Roof, Undertaker’s Buttress, Little Wanda, Keith’s Arête, Bin Laden’s Cave, Forward Thinking Sound Engineer, John Player Special, Bitter and Another Green World. There’s also Blacksmith’s Wall and Smithy, and though most wouldn’t know it, these routes thread back to the people that gave the Edge its name. The Gardoms were an old Baslow family, farmers mostly, though many turned their hands to other kinds of work in a local dual economy. Farming from the Yeld, and later at Bubnell Hall, they worked land between Baslow and Owler Bar. One of them, John (1664–1713), worked as a builder and a blacksmith. He was responsible, amongst other things, for the building of the west staircase at nearby Chatsworth House, an achievement celebrated on a plaque, dated 1702, at the top of the stairs. It takes a climb to reach his name.
