Chapter VI

I woke up the next morning with Brigid tending to my face. My nose was broken and I could only see clearly out of one eye. “Where is Eva?” I asked her. Brigid just looked at me with tears streaming down her face and shook her head. “We don’t know Miss. Your husband got it into his head that you were an unfaithful wife, and Eva was not his daughter. So, he decided to take her away in order to teach you a lesson. Edward got word of what he planned to do from a friend, and tried to stop him before he got to you. But, this time, there was no stopping him Miss. He had been out drinking all night and was not in his right mind when he came to the house. He even took a swing at Edward after he hit you. You have been unconscious for two days,” she sadly replied, while she wiped her tears with her apron. The room started spinning around me with her words and it seemed like a nightmare that would never end. Oh, the thought of my precious angel being scared or hungry made me want to die. “What about her arm?” I solemnly asked Brigid. “He hurt her arm when he took her from me. Did anyone check her arm?” Brigid just shrugged her shoulders at the inquiry and remained quiet for a moment. “There was no time for that,” she finally said. The thought of all of it was too much. I tried to get up but my head felt like it was splitting in two. I vomited on the floor then collapsed in a heap on the bed. I prayed that God would let me die in that moment. I no longer wanted to live without my baby girl. Brigid cleaned up the mess and then came back into the bedroom with her head hung low. “Here Miss, drink this,” she whispered. I drank it and then slept for three days. I dreamed that I went to the other side of the moon and found Eva and we lived there together and nobody could ever harm us again.

When I awoke from the deep slumber, Brigid was there with food. We did not speak to each other as she bathed and dressed me, and bound my breast to make the last of my milk dry up. There was nothing either of us could say to remedy the situation, and we were well aware of it. As she was combing my hair, I noticed that everything in my room that belonged to Eva was removed while I was asleep, like she never existed. I prayed for my heart to stop in that minute, but it never did. A lump started to form in my throat. Brigid felt me tense up again and stopped brushing my hair, only to wrap her arms around from behind me and rock me side to side. My silent tears fell and soaked her sleeve and the floor as we both mourned in silence.
