Chapter Eleven

Luke woke the next morning feeling refreshed and energized. He often struggled with insomnia, his mind too full of things he had to do for work, but that bout with Kennedy and having her even now sleeping on top of him like a warm kitten had worked fantastic. He looked down at her sleeping so peacefully and idly stroked a hand up and down her back, noticing again how thin she was. Now he knew why he felt that protective instinct toward her. She was simultaneously strong and vulnerable. The vulnerability made him want to keep her close. The strength turned him on.

He’d meant it when he’d told her he was flexible in the way he made love. He was open minded, willing to do whatever brought a woman pleasure because it inevitably increased his pleasure. But what he enjoyed the most was when the woman completely and totally put her pleasure in his hands. Only with Kennedy, he’d wanted more, wanted her to wait for his permission to come. He’d never done that before, had no idea where that had come from, but it worked for both of them. And now he only wanted more. More sex, yes, but also more of Kennedy. More spit and fire by day, more shuddering sighs of surrender by night. He’d never wanted someone more the morning after than the day before. That fact should’ve troubled him, especially knowing once Bentley chose him, Kennedy wouldn’t let Luke touch her at all. She’d be pissed off and rightly so.

But none of that seemed to matter right now.

Last night had been so much more than just a game. Though he’d tried to brush it off, teasing her after, he knew exactly why it had been the best sex of his life. He cared about her deeply. She sighed in her sleep, and his chest ached. Why did the one woman he actually felt something for have to be the one woman he couldn’t have?

He glanced at the clock on the nightstand. It was late. They’d have to meet Bentley and Candy soon. Kennedy was scheduled for a mani-pedi with Candy. He and Bentley would be lounging by the pool with mimosas. After lunch, Bentley wanted them to go for a sail since they’d missed it yesterday. He slid Kennedy to the mattress, deciding to quietly take his turn getting ready and let her sleep. After his usual morning routine, he stepped into a steaming hot shower. It was like showering in a huge walk-in closet. He’d have to get Kennedy in here later. Maybe tonight. He worked the shampoo through his hair, closed his eyes and tipped his head back in the water to rinse. When he opened his eyes, he startled. Kennedy was standing naked, hands on her hips, glaring at him through the glass. He went rock hard.

“Were you just going to sneak out and meet Bentley without me?” she demanded.

He pushed the glass door open. “Better grab a condom from my bag.
