Chapter 7

Zennia sat on her bed and pondered what to do about Amanda and Kyle. Her gut instincts were telling her that Amanda had been using Kyle. She didn’t want to tell him, but she didn’t see any way around it.

They’d agreed to change and then meet for dinner in one of the hotel’s dining rooms. She could tell that Kyle was troubled about Amanda and was questioning the couple who claimed to be her parents.

Zennia fell back on the soft bed and stared at the ceiling. Then there were her feelings to consider. Zennia had to admit that she liked Kyle. And the idea that Amanda had used him gave her a certain amount of relief.

Zennia had caught Kyle looking at her in the way a gentleman looks at a lady he might be impressed with. An odd look for someone worried about a missing almost fiancé. And that gave her more questions.

Yes, Kyle and Amanda had been apart for some time, but he still cared about her. She knew that from the troubled look in his eyes. So why did he now look at her as if he might be interested? She didn’t need a man who was sad about one failed love looking to soothe his broken heart with her feelings.

Still, Zennia was beginning to enjoy his company more than the time she’d spent with any other man she’d known. Father had set her up with many charming young men, but she’d never cared for them. Then from the moment Kyle stumbled into Archie’s office, she’d been intrigued with him.

She lightly tapped her cheek. “You need to stay focused. This is your first case, and you don’t need to be falling for him.” Zennia laughed. She could hear her father instructing her about how to handle men.

She sure missed her mother. Father loved her, but he knew nothing about women. “Oh, Mama. What would you tell me? Do you like Kyle? I think you would. He has good manners and is nice to look at. Smart. Ambitious. We make a great pair of detectives.”

Zennia frowned. She was going to have to watch her responses to Kyle. It wouldn’t help the case if she fell for him. She turned over and checked her watch. She had time for a small nap, and then she’d get ready for dinner. Her eyes were about to close when she heard a faint knock across the hall and a female voice.

Zennia tried to ignore it, but once awake she had to know. She tiptoed to her door and opened it a slit. A woman was standing at Kyle’s door. He opened it and let her in. Zennia couldn’t see her face, but if she had to guess, with that blond hair, it had to be Amanda.

Quickly, she changed into an outfit for dinner and worked to tame her flyaway hair. She slipped on her shoes and opened her door. She went across the hall and listened at the door.

Muffled words met her ears, but she clearly heard Kyle say, “Amanda.
