Power Brokers at Memphis: High Steward Amenhotep and High Priest Ptahmose

Only traces of Amenhotep III remain at Memphis, either because little space was left after earlier kings had built there, or because his work was masked by later kings, or because it has not yet been found under modern dwellings and agriculture. Yet it is known that Amenhotep III founded another “mansion of millions of years” in the irrigation area west of Memphis, as though he intended to recelebrate his jubilee in the north, just as he had likely repeated his coronation there 30 years earlier. He named it “Nebmaatra-United-with-Ptah,” and evidence shows that it existed, at least in part, by Year 26.

Like the earliest structure at the memorial temple at Kom el Hettan in western Thebes, the Memphite temple was dedicated to Ptah, or as the inscription goes, given as a monument for [the king's] father Ptah, in excellent works of eternity out of [Tura] limestone, its beauty being like the horizon of the sky, all its doors from the cedar of Lebanon…they being worked with real gold of the foreign countries and electrum and every costly and noble stone.…A lake was dug, and trees were planted and made bright with every august wood from the choice of God's land. The offering tables were of silver and gold, turquoise and every costly and hard stone.
