As I clutched my bag in my hand, the golden-laced elevator kept creeping up floors as we soared into the heavens. Well, not the actual heavens, but it felt like we were traveling that far up. I watched as each level ticked byâseven, eight, nine, tenâand when the metal encasement finally stopped, we were on floor nineteen.
âHome, sweet home,â Rocker said as he swiped a keycard across a black pad.
When the doors slid open, the sprawling space that laid itself out before me took me by the throat and dragged me out of the elevator. My jaw hit the floor as I dropped my bag at my feet, my eyes trying to make sense of what I was seeing. The floors were white marble with flakes of gold, shimmering stuff, and the gold picture frames on the walls housed still-life memories of his family that were always all-smiles, no matter the occasion.
I walked into the middle of what I assumed was his living room and shook my head.
âJesus, you werenât kidding,â I said breathlessly. âYouâve got enough space for a small army in this thing.â
Rocker chuckled as he stepped out of the elevator, allowing it to close. âYou can choose any room youâd like down that hallway.â
âThanks.â
âAnd youâre welcome to stay as long as you need. Or want.â
I nodded mindlessly. âAppreciate it.â
I felt his body heat reaching out for me as he came to stand beside me. âThereâs a second half of this place on the other side, too.â
I whipped my gaze up to his. âThis is only half!?â
He barked with laughter as he threw his head back, and the sound was enough to take me with him. I placed my hand on his upper arm as the two of us laughed with one another as the afternoon sunlight streamed through the massive wall of windows at the front of the penthouse. I doubled over in laughter, releasing every single emotion I had pent up in my body in one fell swoop.
And after I finally caught my breath, I reached for my bag. âI canât thank you enough for this. Really.â
He placed his hands on my shoulders. âYou know how you can repay me?â
I grinned. âBetter watch those cheeky answers, Rocky. I know how ticklish you are.â
He snickered. âNo, nothing like that.â
I was shocked at the disappointment that rolled through my gut. âThen, what is it?â
He started massaging my shoulders. âJust reclaim a little bit of yourself while youâre here. For you. Just for you. If you want to thank me, then do that. Do that for yourself.â
As I gazed into those forest-colored orbs of his, I turned his words over in my head. He wanted me to reclaim part of my life? He wanted me to find that one selfish part of me that didnât want to stop until it had fulfilled itself? Then, I knew exactly what to do.
âScrew disappointment,â I whispered.
âWhat?â Rocker asked.
My bag fell to the ground at my feet as I tossed my arms around his neck.
