Mornings were bad now. Her scent was very faint, unless he opened his weapons chest. He remembered watching her wake in his arms. He remembered her silence when he offered all of himself.

She’d been silent the first two times, when he’d told her directly that he loved her. He’d been a fool to offer even more than the words a third time. A shameful fool, and he would lay that before his Clan today. Snowcat snarled and slashed as if he would rip open Dar’s skin. This was going to hurt on so many levels. Hopefully, he’d feel like he could move forward after it was done.

He untangled himself from Duncan and Sono, stepped over Jreve, snoring slightly, and Xishu tightly curled around his mate, Renau. Shilk was between Renau and old Lars. Each of them was skinnier than the next.

He checked in on Mark’s family, Jon and Barly sleeping with Jon’s brother Jin and his mate Miki. Then there was Beka and Dreu, sleeping the night with Evon’s parents, Tok and Ngele. Everyone was still pulled in together, partly from the coming chill, partly from the excitement of Luna, partly from the lingering wound he’d inflicted on them all. He was the source. He had harmed them all. Luna’s flushed face screaming beneath him, blood splashing her neck and arms, her eyes blind with fear.

He was just rinsing his hair when Evon walked into the washroom. He had an erection, and was covered in Luna’s scent. Dar lunged across the pool before he got a grip on Snowcat. He panted against the stone edge, pushing his rage down into the earth. Evon calmly slid in next to him and began to bathe.

When he’d finished he came up behind Dar and hugged him, laying his head on Dar’s bent shoulders.

“I stand with you today, Dar.”

Dar turned and cupped Evon’s face. “I’m going to go run. One last time before Autumnal comes crashing down.” He’d be able to return, would want to check on things occasionally, but it felt like he was saying good-bye to his land before every Autumnal. Snowcat never truly relaxed unless the Clan was home.

After the run, he met Josh and went to the main hall. The Clan gathered again, as they had just a week ago. Once again he stood with Luna before them. Snowcat was screaming nonstop. In rage, in need. Bile boiled in his stomach.

He faced his people. His heart pounded. He feared his voice would shake and shouted to force it not to.

“I owe balance to Luna. I tried to claim what wasn’t offered. I violated her, and this Clan bears my failure. Do you agree to share my cost?”

Nearly as one, they roared, “We do!”

The pride on the faces looking back at him shamed him. This would haunt him. He looked at Jreve. This was his opportunity to embarrass Dar, to spite him. Jreve looked terrified. He nodded at Dar.

Confused at the man’s support, he faced Luna.
