Jordan felt a dullness in his chest, a feeling of heaviness as he watched the emotions on Laura’s face and heard the pain in her voice.

What an incredible dick I’ve been.

“Laura, I’m sorry,” he said, scrubbing a hand over his face.

He’d misjudged her. No, he hadn’t even given her a chance at all. He’d instantly jumped to conclusions, thinking she was the same as her sister. But here, in front of him, he saw that Laura wasn’t an entitled princess. No, she was a worried sister who hated her sister’s irresponsible behavior just as much as Jordan did.

What’s more, he got the sinking feeling that Laura had been held accountable for Amy’s actions her whole life, and when she finally met her fated mate, he’d done the same.

Laura cleared her throat, shaking her head as though trying to get rid of the bad thoughts. “How about you show me around the hospital?”

He did so, though the entire time he pointed out areas that could use modernization and upgrades, he was thinking about what he could do to make things right between them.

At one point, he asked her how Amy was doing.

“I don’t know,” Laura answered. “I figured she must be fine if I didn’t hear anything from the hospital.”

“What? You haven’t checked in on her?” He raised an eyebrow.

Laura shrugged. “Nope.”

“Why not?”

“You’re mad at her for what she did, well, so am I.” She looked at her tablet, jotting down what he assumed were more notes for her recommendations, though he figured she was really doing whatever she could to avoid looking at him. To avoid opening the emotional can of worms she had earlier.

Too bad. She was his fated mate and sharing with each other was something they should do, no matter how difficult it was.

“Do you think leaving her alone is going to get her to make better decisions?” he asked.

“No,” she replied. “I don’t think I can do anything to influence her to make better decisions. I’m just keeping my distance, so I don’t unload on her again.”

“Unload?”

She finally looked up from her tablet, her face in a glare that he wasn’t sure if was meant for him or for Amy. “Sister stuff. We’ll be fine. My father said he was going to call her this morning, so she’ll know that I’m busy, doing this. Another thing to make up for the dumb shit she’s done.”

“I see.”

After the main tour, she requested to go to the hospital library where all the research notes and files were kept.

“Most of the doctors who are currently working on stuff have it on their computers, but they do leave some stuff in here,” Jordan explained.

He showed her the huge rolling stacks filled with binders. “Anything that was submitted for consideration for funding will have a record kept here, though.”

“Wow.” Laura blinked in shock. “There must be decades of work here.”

He nodded. “Some of it was completed. Some of it was abandoned when they didn’t receive funding. There’s a lot of interesting stuff in there.
