CHAPTER EIGHT

“I’M SO RELIEVED these kiddos made it through.” Gray cradled the tortoiseshell kitten named Sandy. She climbed up his scrubs and nuzzled his neck.

“She’s the one I’m taking home,” Chanda said. “Consider us bonded. You can’t separate us.”

“Hear that, Sandy? You’ve got a home.” He put her back in the crate and picked up Windy, with the white paws, and began taking her vitals. Storm pawed and meowed at the crate door.

“Those two are inseparable,” Nora said. “They sleep curled up together and play even when Sandy is taking a nap. I’d hate to see them separated.”

“Are you volunteering?” Gray asked, switching Windy out with Storm.

“Are you kidding? You’ve met my diva cat. She’d freak out if I brought another home. I tried once and lost a sofa over it. I warned you that I’d only be able to adopt one.”

“Don’t look at me,” Gavin said, pulling surgical tools out of the autoclave. “Unfortunately, my dog’s not cat friendly. That’s why he ended up in a pound in the first place.”

“I personally think our good doctor here ought to take Windy and Storm home to Mandi.” Chanda grinned. “What girl would be able to resist a gift like that? Kittens are better than flowers.”

“Hey. Flowers are fabulous,” Nora said.

“Mandi isn’t sticking around,” Gray reminded them. “It isn’t a good idea to give pets as gifts if you aren’t sure the pet will be taken care of permanently. You know what happens to chicks and ducklings at Easter.”

“You take them to her for now, and when she leaves, they become yours,” Chanda suggested. “You have plenty of room for them to romp around, and Laddie would take his role as daddy very seriously, I’m sure. Mandi might even miss them and come back to visit them. Just saying.” Chanda shook her finger at him before heading back to the front desk to check in an annual exam and shots.

“You’re my office manager, not life manager,” Gray called out after her. “Or relationship consultant,” he muttered. He put Storm back and caught Gavin and Nora grinning at him. “Okay, she’s probably right, but don’t tell her I said that. I’ll think about it. Right now, I have my hands full.”

“He’s totally going to take them home to her,” Nora whispered to Gavin.

“I heard that,” Gray said. He took the chart Chanda had just tucked in the wall holder and went past his office toward the first exam room.

This was his last patient for the afternoon, then he needed to spend a few hours with Mandi. Well, not with Mandi, per se, but working on the house. Liar. You’re wanting to spend time with her. Regular time. Not renovation time. Take the kittens to her. They’ll soften her up.

He backed up two steps and looked through the small window of his office door. Laddie was napping on the love seat. He was bored, poor guy. It was better than leaving him at home, and he got tons of attention from everyone
