Chapter Thirteen
They left in the morning before the rest of the household rose and arrived in London early the following day after an overnight stop at an inn. They could have reached London in a day, but Lady Wimbourne didn’t wish to hurry.
Severus’s London house was in a quiet street near Grosvenor Square. There weren’t many knockers on the doors, this being the season for country house living and sojourns at fashionable spas and they agreed that it would be foolish to open more than one house for a few days’ stay.
The stately pace of their travel allowed for the servants at the town house to be forewarned, so the house was dusted, clean linens on the beds, and the covers off the furniture. It was modern, but the earl had leased the property for a number of years, so it had, to Penelope’s prejudiced eyes, his stamp about it. A few books on a table, some walking canes in the hall, that was all, but it was enough. She wondered what his bedroom was like then stopped herself following that dangerous path. She would know that soon enough. She was fascinated and afraid, in equal measure, of the physical feelings he evoked in her. Nothing like Toby. This man could possess her, as he said he wanted to. But on the journey, he’d behaved like the perfect suitor, at least perfect in Lady Wimbourne’s eyes. Penelope was disappointed, hoping for more passionate kisses and caresses, but apart from a brief goodnight kiss, he remained polite and a little distant.
It was too early to visit Mr. Grey’s office that morning, as he had traveled up with them. However, Severus promised to talk to the Swithland’s man of business and have a contract ready for them to discuss and sign the day after tomorrow.
Lady Wimbourne was delighted to have the opportunity to visit a mantua maker out of season. “She will be glad of the business and we may choose in peace. It will be a pleasure to shop.”
“I love the season.” Penelope said.
Sev’s attention was caught. “I thought you would dislike the crush. My sister does.”
Penelope smiled. “I like being a person in a crowd. I love to overhear them, little parts of their lives, and I like to be part of it all.”
“Not a country girl then?” He quirked an eyebrow.
“There’s a time for that as well.”
“Are you tired, do you need to rest?” he asked abruptly. “There’s an establishment I must visit, and I would appreciate it if you came with me.”
“Oh?”
“The man who makes my instruments for me. I have a new telescope on order; and he sometimes keeps things for me he knows I like. Would you like to come?”
“Yes, above all things.”
“Oh, I hope not above everything.”
Chuckling, he got to his feet. So did Lady Wimbourne. “I will accompany you. Lord Wimbourne is feeling a little unwell, and once he is safely resting now, I will be free to go where you wish.”
Penelope was concerned. Her father had been ill more than usual lately.
