“Alright, Billy, this is not going to hurt one bit, I promise.”
“I trust you, doc,” said the very brave seven-year-old as I began to scan over his stomach. Billy was one of my star patients that had undergone a resection in his lower bowels. Today’s visit was just one of many post-op checks that I had insisted his parents bring him in for. He went through a lot, and I wanted to make sure he was okay, and he was.
“Well, Billy, I have some bad news…” I began to say, winking at his worried parents. Once they knew all was well, I went back to Billy, who was in complete attention. “This is where I say goodbye to you, pal, because you are fully recovered. You don’t have to see my ugly mug again.”
“Yeah! Did you hear that, daddy? I’m all better.”
“Yes, we heard, son, and couldn’t be happier.” I watched his parents take him in for a hug, while I stepped back and watched this amazing family be so thankful that their little boy was going to be fine.
His mother practically tackled me until her husband pried her off me. “I’m sorry,” she said. “It’s been a rough year, and we just want to get back to our lives.”
“I completely understand, and you just let me know when this superstar is pitching, and I will be there at his baseball game to cheer him on,” I said.
Billy gave me a high-five, and then not expecting it, he hugged me tightly and whispered “Thank you” for only me to hear. I nodded, and then one of the nurses came in with the Polaroid camera we kept here and took two photos of all of us for the wall in the pediatric wing. It was the Wall of Miracles, named after and dedicated to all the little humans that defeated the odds. I was damn proud to be a doctor right now.
I checked in with Michele and went through my messages. I didn’t see any from Harley, but then again, Michele knew the golden rule to interrupt me anytime my wife called. Just then, I dialed her cell number only to get her voicemail. It went right to it, meaning Harley must have her phone off. I then dialed her office, where a cheery voice answered her phone.
“Good afternoon, Harley Saunders’ office, Paige speaking.”
“Hi, Paige, it’s Dr. Saunders calling for my wife. May I speak with her, please?”
“I’m sorry, sir. She went home sick today.”
“Oh, okay. I’ll try her at home. Thank you,” I said and then ended the call, wondering what was wrong with my wife. I tried calling the house and got no answer. I waited ten minutes and called again, thinking she might not have heard it, but again, I got the machine. I left her a message.
“Hi, Harley. I just called your office, and they told me that you had gone home, not feeling well. Are you okay? I’m still at the hospital and will be here for a while.
